Wind kicks up 100-year-old volcano ash in Alaska

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) ? A smog-like haze that hung over part of Alaska's Kodiak Island this week was courtesy of a volcanic eruption ? 100 years ago.

The National Weather Service says strong winds and a lack of snow Tuesday helped stir up ash from the 1912 eruption of Novarupta, the largest volcanic blast of the 20th century.

This week, ash from the volcano drifted to about 4,000 feet. It traveled over the Shelikof Strait and across Kodiak Island, prompting an aviation alert. The news was first reported by KMXT radio.

Weather service meteorologist Brian Hagenbuch says the event isn't unheard of, but isn't very common either.

When Novarupta erupted in June 1912, it spit ash as high as 100,000 feet above the sparsely populated Katmai region, covering the remote valley to depths up to 700 feet.

Microsoft: we're calling our apps 'Windows 8 Store Applications'

Ever since those bygone days of Metro, we've all been struggling to figure out precisely what to call the design language of Microsoft's OS offerings. When the question was put to MS's Will Tschumy, the user experience strategist told a crowd at Build that the company is calling Win 8 apps "Windows 8 Store Applications" -- not exactly as elegant as the aesthetic the company is implementing across its products.

Ronnie Wood's Fender guitar, recently auctioned off.

By Miriam Coleman, Rolling Stone

A selection of memorabilia and artwork owned by Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood and his ex-wife, Jo Wood, went up for auction at a two-day sale over the weekend, Reuters reports.

The Art of Ronnie Wood: Highlights from the "Spend or Expend" exhibition at the Butler Institute of American Art

The collection, presided over by Julien's Auctions in Beverly Hills, featured items spanning four decades of Wood's career in music, including clothing, instruments, and tour ephemera. Among the prizes were a 1955 Fender Stratocaster guitar that Wood played onstage, which sold for $60,800. A cardboard cutout of a guitar that Keith Richards had given to Wood sold for $6,875.

The auction also included a lithograph that Wood drew of Eric Clapton, signed by both Wood and Clapton, which sold for $5,120.

Ronnie and Jo Wood separated in 2008 after 23 years of marriage; Julien's said that the items were being sold as part of the divorce settlement, which was finalized in 2011. A portion of the auction's proceeds will go to the musicians' charity MusiCares.

Long-oppressed Kurds get taste of freedom

Danny Gold

A new member of the Kurds' Popular Protection Units (YPG) stands in front of a crowd waving Kurdish flags in Qamishli, Syria. The Kurds are the largest ethnic group in the world without a homeland, totaling more than 30 million people.

By Danny Gold

DERIK, Syria -- From the roof of the new home he is building on the outskirts of the Kurdish controlled city of Derik in northeast Syria, Bashir Said Mohammad can count a dozen or so other structures in different stages of completion. "All this building has happened after the revolution," he says. "Before we were not able to build. You would go to the regime and they would say no, because we are in the Kurdish areas."

In the Kurdish areas of Syria, known as Rojava, people have wasted little time seizing on the opportunities a tentative retreat by President Bashar Assad's government forces three months ago has afforded them. But while a burgeoning civil society independent of Assad's regime continues to grow, the Kurds are desperately trying to avoid the devastating violence that has battered cities like Aleppo and Homs.

The Kurds are the largest ethnic group in the world without a homeland, totaling more than 30 million people. Spread out between parts of Iraq, Syria, Iran and Turkey, they have been subjected to decades of oppression aimed at erasing their cultural identity in all four regions. Kurds make up around 10 percent of the population in Syria, totaling about 2 million, but have been treated as second-class citizens for generations.

In July, Assad forces made a hasty retreat from a number of Kurdish cities and towns in northeastern Syria. Despite a few skirmishes, the situation has remained relatively peaceful.

Though prices have risen, Derik's cafes are still full and people linger in the streets with little fear. Kurdish flags now fly from shops and houses, Kurdish police forces known as Asayish patrol the streets and community organizations known as People's Houses, "mala gels" in Kurdish, have been set up to solve disputes and act as de facto government institutions.

The Kurdish language, which as little as two years ago was forbidden, is now taught in state schools. Delkesh Resol, a 22-year-old former door-to-door salesman, was preparing one recent Sunday morning to teach a Kurdish language lesson to high school students despite a warning from the regime that language classes were to have stopped the previous Thursday.

'Studying in secret'
His act of defiance, which prior to the revolution would have led to a prison sentence and possible torture, did not concern him. "I'm not worried, there is no fear when you're doing something from your heart," Resol said. "Before this we knew there would come a day when we could do this (teach Kurdish in the schools), so we were studying in secret. If we need to teach Kurdish in the streets, we will."

Danny Gold

High school students in a classroom in Derik, Syria, listen to a teacher giving Kurdish lessons. Teaching the Kurdish language was previously forbidden.

The mala gel in Derik is made up of 40 members, and resolves disputes on everything from agriculture to the distribution of donations received from Kurds in Iraq. There is even a member who specializes in divorces. Additional "houses," such as the Women's House and the Youth House, handle more specialized disputes.

Despite Resol's confidence, it is still necessary to be wary of Assad Mukhabarat, or secret police, in Derik. Though the city is described as liberated, plainclothes intelligence officers still lurk the streets. Just exactly who is in power, and how much power they have, is vague.

The lack of heavy conflict and continued presence of Assad men in some of the cities have led to accusations that the Kurdish leadership arranged a secret deal with the regime, where they were allowed to take over certain areas in exchange for not forcing a third front. Others have argued that the Kurds are simply acting practically.

"The regime has not subjected the Kurdish regions to the same level of violence that it has directed against other parts of Syria,"?said Thomas McGee, a researcher on Syrian Kurds at Britain's University of Exeter, who spent two years living in the region and was there for the first eight months of the revolution.?"Kurds have not gone out of their way to bring this upon themselves, learning from the regime's brutal reaction to the 2004 Kurdish uprising." ?In 2004, Kurdish protests that began at a soccer game led to an assault by regime forces that ended with over 30 Kurdish citizens killed.

"The fact that neither the regime nor Kurds en masse have actively declared war on the other need not mean that there is collusion. Each side has their interests and is pursuing this," McGee added. "Kurds, for their part seek stability and wish to avoid escalation."

NBC News

People resisting the army of President Bashar al-Assad in northern Syria cope with loss and prepare for fighting.

Both sides in the Kurdish areas walk a tenuous line, in some areas existing side-by-side while trying to avoid direct conflict that seems inevitable. Regime buildings are still occupied by officials, but the people inside are said to be powerless. In Derik -- which is 90 percent Kurdish -- the mala gel is housed in a building formerly used by a youth committee of Assad's ruling Baath party. It is now adorned with photos of Syrian Kurdish martyrs and Abdullah Ocalan, the leader of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) who is jailed in Turkey. According to the State Department, "PKK terrorist activity has been responsible for the deaths of more than 30,000 Turkish citizens."

It is also next door to a local headquarters for the Baath party, where spray-painted photos of Assad family members dot the perimeter walls. In other parts of the city, these images have been defaced, as have representations of the Syrian flag.

The small city of Girke Lege, another liberated Kurdish area, lies adjacent to the oil city of Rmeilan, which is heavily fortified with Assad troops. A large Kurdish flag welcomes visitors to the city, but after a ten-minute drive down the road, an Assad flag waves above a fortress-like encampment.

'It feels like a new place'
Kana Berakat, 43, a member of the People's House in Girke Lege, recalls the two times he was imprisoned for Kurdish rights activism. At Aleppo University in 1990, he tried to organize a Newroz celebration and spent 70 days in jail. In 2009, he spent a week in jail after attending a Kurdish rights demonstration. That time, Berakat was arrested because he did not have identification papers. Berakat is one of hundreds of thousands of Kurds in Syria who had their citizenship removed in 1962 and are currently stateless.

"It feels like a new place. Before when I went shopping to get tomatoes, I was very afraid," he said. "I thought the regime would take me. Now I walk around not worried, like I am a free man, but I am worried for the future."

One street in Aleppo: Life goes on as death lurks around every corner

Berakat, though enjoying his newfound freedom, is concerned that as the regime continues to falter, it may one day grow desperate and unleash the troops next door. By then, though, he hopes the Kurdish militia will be strong enough to defend the Kurdish people.

Bashir Said Mohammad surveys construction on a new home he began building in Derik, Syria, after the revolution started. He had been previously been denied permission because he is a Kurd.

The Kurds' Popular Protection Units (YPG)?patrol the borders and act as a deterrent to both Assad forces and the rebel Free Syrian Army. Established by the Democratic Union Party (PYD), the most powerful Syrian Kurdish political group, the YPG is now distancing itself and trying to be seen as the universal defenders of the Syrian Kurds instead of the party's military wing.

Videos of YPG forces training have shown a noticeable lack of heavily artillery, but the troop numbers are said to be growing every day. The formation of a fourth brigade was just announced.

More Syria coverage from NBC News

The YPG has not hesitated to attack the regime if provoked, and has sought to prevent both the FSA and the regime from entering Kurdish neighborhoods in more contested areas like Kobane and Efrin. After a Kurdish neighborhood in Aleppo was bombed in late July resulting in the death of 21 civilians, YPG forces killed three regime soldiers and captured a number of others.

Machine guns operated by motorcycle brakes? Get a glimpse at the rebels fighting against Assad's forces in Syria's mountainous Jabal al-Zawiya area.

Last week, Assad's forces bombed a Kurdish area in Aleppo. The FSA and the YPG also clashed, reportedly leaving about 20 fighters dead.

At a recent demonstration in the city of Qamishli, 50 or so new recruits lined up for military exercises. They stood silently, faces covered in scarves as to obscure their identities and surrounded by a crowd of thousands chanting slogans of support. Old women clad in hijabs and young girls in Western-style clothing waved flags, singing and dancing to songs of Kurdish freedom.

The demonstration came a few days after a car bomb exploded outside an Assad base in the city, killing four soldiers. The bombing was later claimed by Jabhat Al-Nusra, a shadowy jihadist organization with ties to al-Qaida that is fighting against the regime. The night before had seen a gunbattle at the airport between the FSA and the regime. These incidents heightened fears that the war was encroaching into Kurdish territory.

/

A look back at the violence that has overtaken the country

Some Kurds believe the FSA means to lure the Kurds further into the conflict, forcing Assad to open up another front and possibly using the Kurdish issue to persuade Turkey to further involve itself. Others think that the regime will grow weary of the Kurdish push for more rights and eventual autonomy, and look to reassert control.

Turkey has leveled accusations that the PYD is simply a front for the Kurdistan Worker's Party (PKK), which has been engaged in a guerrilla war against the Turkish government for 30 years. Turkey has threatened to invade the Kurdish areas to root them out. PYD categorically denies that it is simply a front for the PKK, saying that they share ideology but do not take orders.

NYT: Syria rivals in deadly game of cat-and-mouse

Saleh Muslim Mohammed, the leader of the PYD,?also expressed fear of the Islamist brigades and extremists said to be fighting alongside the FSA.

For now, the Kurds appear intent on staving off escalating conflict while attempting to build up enough strength to protect their newfound rights and eventually obtain a level of freedom that has eluded them in Syria.

"Violence is the last choice, but if anything happens here the YPG will answer," said Mohammed Saeed, a PYD official in Derik. "Every family here has weapons. All the Kurdish, not only the YPG, will defend themselves. Without Kurdish rights, there will be no stability."

Why The Chicken Oyster Is Every Cook's Favorite Part

Have you ever strolled casually into the kitchen just before dinner and discovered whoever roasted the chicken already snacking? Then you've witnessed the aftermath of one of our favorite kitchen rituals. We're here to let you in on every cook's favorite secret: the chicken oysters.

Don't despair. These have nothing to do with Rocky Mountain Oysters or Prairie Oysters. Chicken oysters are simply the two small, oyster-shaped pieces of dark meat that lie on either side of a whole chicken's backbone. Arguably the best part of the chicken, these tender bits are frequently known as the chef's reward for cooking. If we're feeling nice, we'll usually share one with someone else, but we can't admit to always being that generous.

Chicken oysters even have some cinematic fame. In the French film "Amelie," a character named Dominique Bretodeau roasts himself a chicken every night, carves the whole bird, but eats the chicken oysters first. What makes these tiny pieces of meat so coveted? There are only two chicken oysters on every chicken, which makes them a pretty hot commodity. Also, when roasting a chicken, usually breast-side up, the oysters are protected by the body from harsh heat, and continually bathed in fat and roasting juices.

We know what you're thinking, now that you have this information, you want to go out and gorge yourselves on chicken oysters immediately, right? Get yourselves either a half a dozen chickens to roast, or head to the closest Izakaya you can find (sort of a Japanese bar food shrine) where you can always order a few skewers of chicken oyster yakitori.

This video will help you carve a chicken and show you exactly where the chicken oyster lives. Try to control the drool.

How to stay safe during Hurricane Sandy: 7 tips

Fact Sheet

posted on October 29, 2012, at 1:10 PM

Residents of the mid-Atlantic coast are?hunkering down for what promises to be a punishing, simultaneous blow from Hurricane Sandy and two blasts of winter weather. Forecasters are warning of high winds that could topple trees and damage homes, a storm surge that could flood low-lying coastal areas, and heavy rainfall or even snow that could create dangerous conditions far inland. The violent weather is also likely to down power lines and leave many of the 50 million people in the storm's path without electricity. What's the best way to stay safe? Here, seven key tips:

1. If you're in a danger zone, get out
When a hurricane comes barreling in, the primary safety rule is quite simple: Get out of the way. "We've seen a lot of people unfortunately get injured and even losing lives going out during storms when they don't need to be out there," says Federal Emergency Management Agency administrator Craig Fugate. Those in the storm's path can stay as safe as possible if they "heed the evacuation orders and stay off the road and out of this weather that comes in."

2. Stay inside
Even if you aren't ordered to leave, "stay indoors and avoid the calmed 'eye of the storm' that can pass quickly, leaving you outside at risk," says Ryan Jaslow at CBS News. Most hurricane-related injuries are caused by flying glass and other debris, and you can avoid getting hit if you hunker down in a safe spot, inside and away from windows and doors. When the winds are at their worst, a bathroom or dry basement can provide the best shelter.

3. If you plan to stay put, be prepared
If you're one of the 50 million Americans who could be affected by the storm, you need to get ready, now, even if you're not being advised to leave home, says Jaslow at CBS News. Stock your home with emergency supplies, including five gallons of drinking water per person (enough for three to five days), non-perishable foods, a battery-powered radio and flashlights, extra batteries, a first-aid kit and manual, prescription medicines, baby food, sleeping bags, extra blankets, and other necessities. Also, have important documents handy ? including insurance policies, wills, licenses, and anything "you might need to grab in a pinch."

4. Be careful what you eat
Turn your refrigerator and freezer temperatures to their coldest setting. "When the power goes out, that food in the fridge will last only so long," says ABC News Radio. Once the electricity has been out for four hours or more, "you should throw away any perishable food" you have in the fridge. If your freezer's full, leave it closed and your frozen food should stay safe for 48 hours. If it's only half full, the "safe window" is just 24 hours. And open the door as infrequently as possible, as you let cold air escape every time you open it, "effectively speeding up the clock for when your food might spoil." Use common sense, and toss anything that looks, feels, or smells funny. And always follow the "old rule, 'When in doubt, throw it out.'"

5. Make sure everyday items don't turn dangerous
If you've still got time, you should "trim back trees and shrubbery around your home," says Nashoba Publishing, and get rid of diseased or damaged tree limbs that could be blown down and sent flying by high winds. Clear rain gutters to prevent flooding in the wrong places. And do what you can to prevent items outside your home from being "picked up by strong winds and used as a missile." Make sure storage sheds and kids' playhouses are securely anchored, and bring in loose lawn furniture, hanging plants, trash cans, and other items. If you don't have storm shutters, cover windows with plywood bolted to the surrounding wall.

6. Use your generator wisely
"In a blackout, many view generators as a lifesaver," says ABC News. "But use them improperly, and they can actually put your life in danger." Generators use carbon monoxide, which you can't detect because it's colorless and odorless. Each year, 15,000 people get sent to emergency rooms and 500 people die from carbon monoxide poisoning. "To keep you and those who live with you safe, never use a generator inside your home or garage," even if the windows are open.

7. Listen to people who have been through it
Some of the best tips come from people who have already weathered a monster storm, says Kathleen Koch at CNN. So take note of these helpful pointers from people who lived through Katrina: Open drawers when making a video of your belongings for insurance purposes so you don't miss anything; have a tire plug kit and pliers to pull out nails and other sharp debris to keep you mobile after the storm; text instead of calling to extend your cell phone battery; don't expect safes and safe-deposit boxes to keep your important belongings dry in a flood; and have tarps ready to keep your home dry if wind blows shingles off your roof.

Homemade (Vegan) Pumpkin Spice Latte | Nutritious America | Eat ...

(A special column written for our friends @ Diets in Review)

Tis? the season to consume many, many, many pumpkin spice lattes. A now ubiquitous beverage of fall, this Starbucks flavored java is loved the world over.

Last month there was a reported pumpkin spice syrup shortage at hundreds of Starbucks around the country; lovers of this beverage were outraged! It was the Pumpkin Spice LattePOCALYPYSE! Happily for the PSL fans (that?s what they affectionately call this fall beverage) the syrup was replenished and drinking resumed.

But wait! I am so sorry to burst your pumpkin bubble, but do you know really know what you are drinking? Espresso, steamed milk, and pumpkin spice syrup, yes, but what is in that pumpkin spice syrup? I for one, wanted to know. Starbucks isn?t terribly forthcoming about ingredients. Their website is extremely helpful with fat and calorie counts, but when it comes to actual ingredients one must dig deeper to come up with the truth?.

United wins at Chelsea in EPL after 10-year wait

By ROB HARRIS

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 7:52 p.m. ET Oct. 28, 2012

LONDON (AP) -Substitute Javier Hernandez ended Manchester United's 10-year wait for a Premier League victory at Chelsea on Sunday, striking late to secure a 3-2 win after the hosts had two players sent off.

The Mexico striker scored in the 75th minute to inflict the league leaders' first loss of the season and put United just a point behind Chelsea.

"It was a really difficult game as they commanded at the end of the first half, we were very lucky we scored the last goal," Hernandez said. "For some people it will be very controversial, for others it won't. For us, we won the three points and it was very difficult."

United threw away a two-goal lead established inside 12 minutes. Robin van Persie saw his shot turned in by Chelsea defender David Luiz before getting on the scoresheet himself.

Chelsea fought back as Juan Mata curled in a free kick just before half time and Ramires headed in an equalizer eight minutes after the break.

Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic was sent off in the 63rd for bringing down Ashley Young, and striker Fernando Torres received a second booking for diving.

"It's a shame a game like this has to be decided in this manner by officials," Chelsea manager Roberto di Matteo said. "Surely when he watches the images he (the referee) will realize he made a big mistake."

Chelsea had not lost at Stamford Bridge in a league match to United since Roman Abramovich bought the club in 2003, and he watched in frustration as his side's comeback counted for nothing.

"It's been 10 years since we have won down here," United manager Alex Ferguson said. "We had a good record until Jose (Mourinho) came along (in 2004) and spoiled the party."

Chelsea will have a chance for revenge on Wednesday when the teams meet again in the League Cup here.

Early on, Chelsea appeared to be missing captain John Terry, who was serving the second game of his four-match ban for racially abusing an opponent.

After just four minutes, United ripped through Chelsea's defense down the right with Young laying the ball off to Wayne Rooney, who squared to Van Persie in the penalty area.

The Netherlands striker's shot came off the post but it bounced off Luiz into the net.

Chelsea's brittle back line was sliced through again in the 12th when Rafael da Silva was given too much space to storm down the right flank unchallenged.

The defender slipped the ball through to Antonio Valencia, who crossed to the unmarked Van Persie to sweep in his ninth United goal since arriving in August.

United was playing with confidence, pinging the ball across the turf with ease and precession.

Chelsea took time to assert itself on the visitors, but kept United goalkeeper David de Gea busy for the rest of the half, blocking a free kick of Luiz with his outstretched right foot and then thwarting Gary Cahill's header.

But the pressure paid off for Chelsea a minute before the break, with Mata superbly curling the free kick inside the post after Eden Hazard was brought down by Rooney.

The momentum was with Chelsea - and continued after the break as United's defense was the one to be exposed.

The equalizer came eight minutes into the second half as United failed to close down Chelsea's fluid attacking play.

Mata took the ball to the byline and found space to whip in a cross that Torres headed across to Oscar. The Brazilian then chipped across to Ramires, who rose above Tom Cleverley to head past De Gea.

As the hosts continued to pressure the United defense, their plan was ripped apart by being reduced to 10 men in the 63rd when Ivanovic brought down Young, halting his advance to goal.

Six minutes later, referee Mark Clattenburg pulled out the red card again to further infuriate Chelsea.

Having been booked at the end of the first half for a foul on Cleverley, Torres received a second yellow card after being adjudged to have gone down too easily under Evans' challenge.

"I made a bit of contact but I don't feel it was enough to bring him down," Evans said. "I think he probably realized he wasn't getting the ball and went down."

Hernandez restored United's lead in the 75th, 10 minutes after replacing Cleverley.

Van Persie's initial shot appeared to be creeping into the bottom right of the net after Cech got a touch to it but the goalkeeper hacked the ball away.

It fell to Rafael, whose shot was turned into the net by Hernandez, although the striker later accepted he might have been offside.

Just after Hernandez's winner, a steward in front of Chelsea fans fell to the ground and was still receiving treatment as the match ended.

"He slipped and fell and may have hurt his knee," Chelsea spokesman Steve Atkins said, refuting initial suggestions that the steward was hit by an object.

Full Dragon exits space station, Earth next stop

(AP) ? An unmanned Dragon freighter left the International Space Station on Sunday with a stash of precious medical samples and aimed for a Pacific splashdown to end the first official shipment under a billion-dollar contract with NASA.

Astronauts aboard the International Space Station used a giant robot arm to release the commercial cargo ship 255 miles up. The California-based SpaceX company will steer its capsule back to Earth via parachutes on Sunday afternoon, a couple hundred miles off the Baja California coast.

The supply ship is bringing back nearly 2,000 pounds of science experiments and old station equipment. Perhaps the most eagerly awaited cargo is nearly 500 frozen samples of blood and urine collected by station astronauts over the past year.

The Dragon is the only delivery ship capable of returning items, now that NASA's shuttles are retired to museums. Atlantis made the last shuttle haul to and from the station in July 2011.

SpaceX ? more formally Space Exploration Technologies Corp. ? launched the capsule three weeks ago from Cape Canaveral, full of groceries, clothes and other station supplies. Ice cream as well as fresh apples were especially appreciated by the station residents, now back up to a full crew of six.

It's the second Dragon to return from the orbiting lab; the first mission in May was a flight demo. This flight is the first of 12 deliveries under a $1.6 billion contract with NASA.

"It was nice while she was on board," space station commander Sunita Williams said as the Dragon backed away. "We tamed her, took her home and, literally and figuratively, there's a piece of us on that spacecraft going home to Earth."

She added to the SpaceX flight controllers in Hawthorne, Calif.: "Congratulations Hawthorne and thank you for her."

The Dragon will be retrieved from the Pacific and loaded onto a 100-foot boat that will haul it to Los Angeles. From there, it will be transported to McGregor, Texas.

The medical samples will be removed as quickly as possible, and turned over to NASA within 48 hours of splashdown, according to SpaceX. Everything else will wait for unloading in McGregor.

A Russian supply ship, meanwhile, is set to blast off this week. It burns up upon descent, however, at mission's end. So do the cargo vessels provided by Europe and Japan.

SpaceX is working to transform its Dragon cargo craft into vessels that American astronauts could fly in another four or five years. Until SpaceX or another U.S. company is able to provide rides, NASA astronauts must rely on Russian rockets to get to and from the space station.

Migraine in children may affect school performance

ScienceDaily (Oct. 29, 2012) ? Children with migraine are more likely to have below average school performance than kids who do not have headaches, according to new research published in the October 30, 2012, print issue of Neurology?, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

The study of 5,671 Brazilian children ages 5 to 12 found that those with migraine were 30 percent more likely to have below average school performance than those with no headaches.

"Studies have looked at the burden of migraine for adolescents, but less work has been done to determine the effect of migraine on younger children," said study author Marcelo E. Bigal, MD, PhD, of Merck & Co. in Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, and a member of the American Academy of Neurology.

For the study, the students' teachers provided information on students' performance that was the same information provided to educational boards. Teachers also completed a validated questionnaire screening for emotional and behavioral problems and interviewed parents with a questionnaire covering medical history, headaches and other information.

The study found that 0.6 percent of the children had chronic migraine, or migraine on 15 or more days per month, 9 percent had episodic migraine, and 17.6 percent had probable migraine, which meant they met all but one of the criteria for migraine and did not meet the full criteria for any other type of headache syndrome.

The link between migraine and poor performance in school was even stronger for children with migraines that were more severe, lasted longer, or for children with chronic migraine, as well as for those who also had emotional or behavioral problems.

"With approximately one-fourth of school-age children having headaches with migraine features, this is a serious problem, especially for those with frequent, severe attacks that do not subside quickly," Bigal said. "Parents and teachers need to take these headaches seriously and make sure children get appropriate medical attention and treatment."

Bullion Baron: Precious Metals (Gold/Silver) in Australia Exposed!

"As always consult your financial advisor before galloping into any gold rush."

How many financial advisors would include self stored (e.g. personal safety deposit box) physical Gold or Silver in their suggested plan for you when they don't receive a commission from the purchase? If you plan to see a financial advisor about purchasing precious metals, find one who charges an hourly rate for his services rather than one who works on commission and make sure it's someone who is familiar with the different ways of getting exposure to Gold and Silver.

The last time I was reviewing my income protection (around 18 months ago now) I asked the financial planner about exposure to precious metals through their boutique firm and got a blank look. The closest they had was a mixed commodities fund.

While Kochie's?article did go over a few key points, it was not really helpful for the novice at all (and was more or less a rehash of a very similar article 2 years ago). A much more?in-depth?guide I wrote last year for buying physical Gold and Silver can be found?here (Gold and Silver Buyers Guide), but even this guide has it's limitations, it already assumes that the reader wants to take on the risks and responsibilities associated with owning physical.

The problem with either of the above linked guides (Kochie's brief overview or my guide to buying physical) is that they attempt to put the cart before the horse. Before buying precious metals you really need to have an idea of why you are buying and this will guide you toward the most suitable form of precious metals exposure.

What many people fail to realise is that there is a huge variety of different ways to gain exposure to Gold and Silver, just like property (residential, commercial, buy and hold,?renovate, develop, real estate investment trusts, local or overseas purchase) or shares (technical trading, dividend investing, fundamental company analysis or buying an index). The variations are almost limitless when you consider that some people may choose to gain exposure in multiple ways and for multiple reasons.

Here are some questions you may need to ask yourself before jumping into precious metals:

Are you buying to preserve wealth or create it?

Do you consider Gold and Silver to be money or an asset?

Do you have a short or long time frame?

How often will you want to change your position?

How involved do you want to be in managing your exposure to precious metals?

What are your expectations on the value of the AUD relative to the USD?

What level of counter-party risk are you comfortable with?

And here are some of the aims of those who currently hold:

Used for wealth preservation over the long term (savings)

Tool to increase wealth relative to other assets (speculate on changing ratios)

Tool to increase wealth in ounces by trading the Gold:Silver Ratio (GSR)

Trading short term momentum or technical chart patterns for profit
An investment via purchase of profitable mining companies
Insurance to protect from complete currency collapse
A hedge against falling AUD (protect against systematic risk/shocks)

Below is a brief flow chart showing a majority of the ways that you can gain exposure to the precious metals bull market (in Australia). You can't rely on this chart alone to make a decision on which type of exposure is right for you, but hopefully it highlights the diversity of options available:

Precious metals are used by many different types of people, with different views, investing over different time frames and for different reasons, so trying to make a decision on which exposure is best for you can be difficult.

For someone who wants to trade the bull market purely on a technical basis and take short term profits, purchasing physical bullion is probably not the smartest move. In much the same way someone who is buying Gold and Silver in the expectation that they will replace fiat currency following the collapse of the current financial/monetary system is not going to be buying CFDs. Once you've given thought to your reasons and goals for buying precious metal, it usually becomes much easier to decide on the form you buy.

Some precious metal advocates will tell you physical is the only way to go, "If you don't hold it, you don't own it", to which there are varying degrees. For example some feel that physical is best kept in your personal possession, either stored at home or buried on your property. Others who advocate physical think that holding it in a personally organised safety deposit box poses a lesser risk than storing at home. Neither method it without it's risks (for example precious metals stored at home are are at risk of theft or could get damaged in a fire). It's a pretty disturbing thought, but if someone knows you store valuables at home they could threaten you or someone in your family with a weapon to get you to tell them where your stack is, even if buried).

It's not really a surprise that we see opinions like this:

Today gold is traded like a volatile commodity by gamblers who like to call themselves traders. Or else it is held as a small percentage of one's wealth for the expressed purpose of "insurance." Gold is actually a pretty poor inflation hedge as long as it is under external influences such as the inflatable supply of paper gold BB liabilities. So the only way it can even hope to perform as prescribed is as insurance in physical form only. Yet so many investors still hold "paper gold" as the insurance portion of their portfolio. This alone really highlights the confusion in Western "professional" investment thought.

Most people are savers, not investors or traders. Yet today we are all forced to be investors chasing a yield because there is no such thing as a perfect inflation hedge. If there were such a thing, a large portion of the "investing public" would not be anywhere near stocks and bonds. Even the most "risk free" bonds, US Treasuries, have the greatest risk of all, currency risk. And in the case of the dollar, this is exposure to a risk that, today, is well out of the hands of the currency manager thanks to seven decades of functioning as the global reserve standard. FOFOA

When we've seen events in recent history that look like this:

It's one thing for $1.2 billion to vanish into thin air through a series of complex trades, the well-publicized phenomenon at bankrupt MF Global. It's something else for a bar of silver stashed in a vault to instantly shrink in size by more than 25%.

That, in essence, is what's happening to investors whose bars of silver and gold were held through accounts with MF Global.

The trustee overseeing the liquidation of the failed brokerage has proposed dumping all remaining customer assets?gold, silver, cash, options, futures and commodities?into a single pool that would pay customers only 72% of the value of their holdings. In other words, while traders already may have paid the full price for delivery of specific bars of gold or silver?and hold "warehouse receipts" to prove it?they'll have to forfeit 28% of the value. Barrons

The problem today is that any investment or form of savings has an element of risk. In a recent thread on Silver Stackers there was discussion around the difference between gambling and speculation and the following was an interesting take:

Gambling has a crucial difference with speculation: with gambling, there was no risk prior to the act of gambling, with speculation, there was. On the moment someone buys silver, he reacts on the risk of inflation. On the moment someone pulls the lever of a casino slot machine, he just created the risk. He can decide to not pull the lever, and just go away. Speculation is reacting and thus requires insight, gambling is just a random choice, and requires nothing. Pirocco on Silver Stackers
Someone who thinks their cash sitting in a bank account is safe might want to consider the fact they are at risk of their purchasing power diminishing as tax on interest and inflation resuts in a negative real return in some cases. Not to mention the risk of their bank going insolvent.?

While today Australian ADI's are protected by a limited government guarantee, there are still many places that people can park their cash not realising the risk they assume by putting their money in these funds (some perhaps not realising they are not covered by the government guarantee):

The collapse of major mortgage fund Banksia Securities was exacerbated by an apparent failure to adequately account for almost $200 million in overdue loans and repossessed properties.

Banksia, based in Bendigo, was swept into receivership on Thursday night holding $650m on behalf of about 3000 investors, many of them retirees.

The fund operated by raising money from ordinary investors and then lending money to property developers and other businesses at higher rates.

Four weeks ago, auditors for the company approved the group's accounts and raised no concerns about its financial viability. The Australian

For those who have already decided on physical precious metals and are wondering what form to buy it in, checkout this (somewhat tongue in cheek) flowchart from Jislizard on Silver Stackers: For a more serious breakdown (which includes Gold) you might like to take a look at the section in my guide called "What to Buy" which briefly describes the main physical options available (in Australia) including: coins, rounds, bars and more.

One thing I would implore, if you are going to use "paper" forms of Gold and Silver, make sure you read the fine print. Many of the clauses and risks listed in the terms and conditions booklet can be an eye opener.

This post is not intended as a be all and end all on investing in Gold/Silver in Australia, but hopefully it will get you thinking before making a purchase and reduce the number of people blindly following the advice of others who may not have your best interests in mind and while I can appreciate the irony of having just said that while displaying affiliate links on this blog to purchase physical bullion, I can honestly say that I think it's a good idea for all investors to have at least some of their precious metals exposure in physical.

New Syria fighting despite UN-backed truce

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian warplanes and artillery struck rebellious suburbs east of Damascus, while rebels attacked regime positions elsewhere near the capital Sunday, violence that marred the third day of what was meant to be a four-day holiday truce, activists said.

A U.N-backed truce declared for the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha has failed to take hold, with fighting reported from the start. Activists said more than 150 people were killed Friday, the start of the holiday, and more than 120 people on the second day, similar to previous daily casualty tolls.

The cease-fire was seen as a long shot from the outset. The international mediator in Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, failed to get firm commitments from all combatants.

At least one rebel-linked radical Islamic group, the al-Qaida-inspired Jabhat al-Nusra, rejected the truce outright. In a video posted this week, the leader of al-Qaida, Ayman al-Zawahri, urged "Muslims everywhere" to support Syria's uprising.

The truce was called as the two sides were battling over strategic targets in a largely deadlocked civil war. They include a military base near a main north-south highway, the main supply route to Aleppo, Syria's largest city, where regime forces and rebels have been fighting house-to-house. It appears each side feared the other could exploit a lull to improve its positions.

With the unraveling of the cease-fire, it's unclear what the international community can do next.

The holiday truce marked the first attempt in six months to reduce the bloodshed in Syria, where activists say more than 35,000 people have been killed in 19 months.

Brahimi has not said what would follow a cease-fire. Talks between Syrian President Bashar Assad and the Syrian opposition on a peaceful transition are blocked, since the Syrian leader's opponents say they will not negotiate unless Assad resigns, a step he has refused to take.

The international community has been unable to rally around other options, including tougher U.N. Security Council action, arming the rebels or direct military intervention.

The failure of the truce to take hold "highlighted the impotence of the international community's approach" to the Syria conflict, said Salman Shaikh, director of the Brookings Doha Center, a think tank.

In April, Brahimi's predecessor as Syria mediator, former U.N. chief Kofi Annan, tried to launch a more comprehensive plan ? an open-ended cease-fire to be enforced by hundreds of U.N. monitors, followed by talks on a political transition. Annan's plan failed to gain traction, and after an initial decrease in violence, his proposed cease-fire collapsed.

In fighting Sunday, Syrian warplanes struck the eastern Damascus suburbs of Arbeen, Harasta and Zamalka to try to drive out rebels, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which compiles information from activists in Syria. The Observatory also reported shelling attacks in these areas.

Local activists and another opposition group, the Local Coordination Committees, said warplanes struck Arbeen and Harasta. The LCC said eight people were killed Sunday in Damascus and its suburbs.

Three amateur videos posted online showed warplanes flying over the eastern suburbs.

One video showed two huge clouds of smoke rising from what was said to be Arbeen, and the sound of an airplane could be heard in the background. It was not clear if the video showed the aftermath of shelling or an airstrike.

Another video showed destruction inside the Sheikh Moussa mosque in Harasta. Windows and doors were blown out, glass and debris scattered across the mosque's floor. The narrator broke down as he was heard saying: "Where are the Muslims? Our mosques are being bombed and no one cares."

Also in Harasta, a video showed widespread destruction, including rows of buildings with shattered windows, gaping holes and shell-pocked facades.

The videos appeared consistent with Associated Press reporting in the area.

In Douma, another Damascus suburb, rebels wrested three positions from regime forces, including an unfinished high-rise building that had been used by regime snipers, according to the Observatory and Mohammed Saeed, a local activist.

Fighting was also reported near Maaret al-Numan, a town along the Aleppo-Damascus highway that rebels seized earlier this month. Opposition fighters have also besieged a nearby military base and repeatedly attacked government supply convoys heading there. The Observatory said the Syrian air force fired missiles and dropped barrel bombs ? makeshift weapons made of explosives stuffed into barrels ? on villages near the base.

The Syrian government has accused the rebels of violating the cease-fire from the start. The state-run news agency SANA said opposition fighters carried out attacks in a number of areas, including in Aleppo and the eastern town of Deir el-Zour.

FDA: Pharmacy tied to meningitis outbreak knew of bacteria

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Staffers at a pharmacy linked to the deadly meningitis outbreak documented dozens of cases of mold and bacteria growing in rooms that were supposed to be sterile, according to federal health inspectors.

In a preliminary report on conditions at the pharmacy, the Food and Drug Administration said Friday that even when the contamination at New England Compounding Center exceeded the company's own safety levels, there is no evidence that staffers investigated or corrected the problem. The FDA uncovered some four dozen reports of potential contamination in company records, stretching back to January this year.

The report comes from an FDA inspection of the Framingham, Mass.-based company earlier this month after steroid injections made by the company were tied to an outbreak of fungal meningitis. FDA officials confirmed last week that the black fungus found in the company's vials was the same fungus that has sickened 338 people across the U.S., causing 25 deaths.

The New England Compounding Center's lawyer said Friday the pharmacy "will review this report and will continue our cooperation with the FDA."

Compounding pharmacies like NECC traditionally fill special orders placed by doctors for individual patients, turning out a small number of customized formulas each week. They have traditionally been overseen by state pharmacy boards, though the FDA occasionally steps in when major problems arise. Some pharmacies have grown into much larger businesses in the last 20 years, supplying bulk orders of medicines to hospitals that need a steady supply of drugs on hand.

The FDA report provides new details about NECC's conditions, which were first reported by state officials earlier this week. The drug at the center of the investigation is made without preservative, so it's very important that it be made under highly sterile conditions. Compounding pharmacies prepare their medications in clean rooms, which are supposed to be temperature-controlled and air-filtered to maintain sterility.

But FDA inspectors noted that workers at the pharmacy turned off the clean room's air conditioning every night. FDA regulators said that could interfere with the conditions needed to prevent bacterial growth.

Inspectors also say they found a host of potential contaminants in or around the pharmacy's clean rooms, including green and yellow residues, water droplets and standing water from a leaking boiler.

Additionally, inspectors found "greenish yellow discoloration" inside an autoclave, a piece of equipment used to sterilize vials and stoppers. In another supposedly sterile room inspectors found a "dark, hair-like discoloration" along the wall. Elsewhere FDA staff said that dust from a nearby recycling facility appeared to be drifting into the pharmacy's rooftop air-conditioning system.

The FDA on Friday declined to characterize the severity of the problems at NECC, or to speculate on how they may have led to contamination of the products made by the pharmacy. FDA emphasized that the report is based on "initial observations" and that the agency's investigation is ongoing.

The agency also provided new details about the pharmacy's handling of the steroids it recalled last month. The company recalled three lots of steroids made since May that totaled 17,676 single-dose vials of medicine ? roughly equivalent to 20 gallons. The shots are mainly used to treat back pain.

According to the agency's report, the pharmacy began shipping vials from the August lot to customers on Aug. 17. That was nearly two weeks before the pharmacy received test results from an outside laboratory confirming the sterility of the drug. When FDA scientists went back and tested the same lot this month, they found contamination in 50 vials.

Outside experts said the report paints a picture of a dysfunctional operation.

"The entire pharmacy was an incubator of bacteria and fungus," said Sarah Sellers, a former FDA officer who left the agency in 2008 after unsuccessfully pushing it to increase regulation of compounding pharmacies. She now consults for drug manufacturers. "The pharmacy knew this through monitoring results, and chose to do nothing."

Associated Press Sports

updated 5:38 p.m. ET Oct. 26, 2012

NEW YORK (AP) - English Premier League games will no longer air on Fox's networks in the United States after this season.

Fox Sports Media Group said in a statement Friday that the EPL informed the company it would not be accepting its bid. Fox Soccer had been the primary U.S. outlet for the Premier League for almost two decades.

Fox sublicensed some of its games to ESPN.

Fox still owns rights for UEFA's Champions League and Europa League among other international events and will broadcast men's and women's World Cups from 2015-22.

The Premier League could move to NBC's networks, which made a deal for Major League Soccer last year.
