Customer Service Downsizing | Frederic Siegel Business

Where did everybody go? You and I both have been in stores where it?s hard to find someone who is available or willing to help you. And when you find someone, just how helpful are they? It seems to me that Customer Service has been downsized in this economy.

According to MSN Money?s article ?Customer Service Hall of Shame ? How Companies were ranked?, 77% of survey respondents expect the following from their customer service experience:

Knowledgeable Staff ? 44%
Friendly Staff ? 18%
Readily Available Staff ? 15%

Having a knowledgeable staff is number one with a whopping 44%. The good news is that we don?t have to downsize product knowledge when we downsize staff. Here are some high-impact, cost-effective steps you can take to keep your customers in the know:

1) Set the expectation ? Communicate to your staff that product knowledge is a key to their success as well as yours.

2) Ask your customers ? Do an informal survey and ask if they are getting the information they need to make purchase decisions.

3) Develop on-going training ? Consistent product knowledge training and role-playing keeps your staff in the conversation.

4) Award product knowledge expertise ? Recognize your employees who go above and beyond in communicating their knowledge with customers.

5) Share product questions ? At weekly meetings, ask your staff to share product questions and how they responded.

6) Vendor participation ? Ask your vendors to provide product training for your staff.

7) Product Events ? Hold in-store events for your customers to learn more about your products and services and have your staff conduct the training.

As they say, knowledge is power.

There is nothing more assuring for a customer to get answers they need about the products or services they want to buy. Make it easy for them. Choose to be a business that properly educates, trains, and motivates their staff to provide the best service possible.

Romney Camp Condemns Convention-goers' Racist Taunts

Since two Republican National Convention attendees were ejected for hurling racist taunts at an African American CNN camerawoman, the Romney campaign has been in repeated contact with the network, senior Romney campaign adviser Russ Schriefer said on a conference call with reporters Thursday morning.

Those talks have included apologies, Schriefer said.

"We thought it was absolutely deplorable. We condemn it in any way-to the highest possible way. That behavior is just reprehensible, so we have-we could not be more clear on that," Schriefer said. "There were immediate and continued conversations and apologies with CNN did take place."

On Wednesday, CNN reported that two people were removed from the GOP convention after they threw nuts at a CNN camerawoman, saying, "This is how we feed animals."

The convention released a statement condemning the incident, CNN reported. It read: " "Two attendees tonight exhibited deplorable behavior. Their conduct was inexcusable and unacceptable. This kind of behavior will not be tolerated."

CNN acknowledged the incident, stating, "CNN can confirm there was an incident directed at an employee inside the Tampa Bay Times Forum earlier this afternoon. CNN worked with convention officials to address this matter and will have no further comment."

Japan factory output falls 1.2% in July

Japan's factory output unexpectedly fell 1.2 percent in July, the industry ministry said Friday, the latest evidence that turmoil overseas is damaging a recovery for the world's third-largest economy.

The decline from a month earlier was worse than a market forecast of 1.8 percent growth. The government kept in place its assessment that factory production was stuck in a flat trend.

Growing fears about the fiscal situation in Europe -- a major market for Japanese products -- and a strong yen is hurting demand for products from the nation's factories.

A survey of manufacturers released with the data showed that companies expect output to inch up 0.1 percent in August from the previous month before tumbling 3.3 percent in September.

Separately, other official data released Friday showed consumer prices were down 0.3 percent on-year in July, the third consecutive month of falling prices, the internal affairs ministry said.

Japan has been in deflation for years, with a series of monetary and fiscal policy moves failing to reverse the trend.

The ministry also reported that Japan's unemployment rate was flat at 4.3 percent in July, in line with market forecasts, according to Dow Jones Newswires.

Satisfactory vs. Great Customer Service: When User Friendliness ...

By Stefan Hoffmann, Industry Solution Manager, itelligence AG

If you?re in the tertiary sector of the economy, specifically working in the business of improving business and helping other companies, like consulting, technology and professional service firms, you have to practice what you preach. This is most important with customer service.

In itelligence?s case, we work with companies?to provide a broad range of consulting and customer support services to maximize SAP solutions, including implementations, business intelligence, application management services and hosting. This includes powerful tools that SAP has developed and enhanced over the years.

However, our work goes beyond the implementation stages. Based on our mass number of industry specific implementations, we have seen a growing demand, commonalities from within trades, and evolving trends that call for even more user-friendly tools to make more use of SAP solutions. itelligence customizes solutions that cover a company?s entire value chain, which can be implemented and operated transparently and quickly within sensible cost parameters. By pre-configuring an industry solution, we set up the majority of processes in advance as part of a complete solution.

Saving Time and Money

What it all comes down to is saving time and money. But, our clients shouldn?t be the only ones benefiting. That?s why we always practice what we preach as it relates to implementation. Like our clients, we promote additional tools that we have developed in order to capitalized on the extended ERP landscape to fit our exact business needs, ensure efficiency and provide customers the highest level of service.? This is accomplished by adding business processes that are typical to a select industry, additional functionality, and fine-tuning the tools that SAP delivers. ??

However, in many different industries, numerous companies are still struggling with integration. While the customer service department may takes orders, they may have no idea of what?s in the warehouse, what?s involved with the supply chain, logistics, etc.

What does ERP bring to the table? Simply put, it connects the different departments. For example, when a customer service rep takes a phone call, they can address other department-specific questions: Do you have product ?A?? Yes, we have 15 in the warehouse; and yes, you have enough credit to buy them from us; and so-forth.

By consolidating all the pieces into a cockpit screen, customer service reps have access to a 360-degree view that provides a central point for all required information with just one click. The flexible, user-friendly system increases our productivity and time management.

Industry specific templates that fit on top of SAP ERP

When companies attempt to complement their existing ERP systems with an industry specific solution, they often create a worse situation. Bolt-on applications frequently lack the right integration points, requiring the purchase or development of an additional interface.

For example, companies without process integration understand the chaos that results from having one system that tracks leads, another that monitors opportunities, and yet another that creates sales or service orders. Best practices with process integration and industry-specific, fine-tuned solutions can be ready to use on day one, out of the box if they are customized and fit for the ERP system.

?Closing the gap from functionality to usability

Applications must focus specifically around customer service.? itelligence?s one-click cockpit approach makes servicing clients easier, quicker and more effective. For example, by adding solutions that bring everything up front and are more user-friendly, customer service call times can be reduced to enable representatives to field more calls. Even more, the entire management of the customer is integrated across all essential business processes and depicted in such a way that it is transparent for everyone involved. From new customer acquisition to order processing to customer service ?business processes are more efficient, more expeditious and more cost-effective. This places best practice processes for supporting:

  • Interaction Center ? Maximize customer loyalty, cut costs, and boost revenue by transforming the customer interaction center into a strategic delivery channel for marketing, sales, and service efforts across all touch points.
  • Service ? Drive service revenue and profitability with functionality that helps to better manage complaints and returns.
  • Sales ? Acquire, grow, and retain profitable relationships with functionality that helps to better manage sales performance, accounts, contacts, opportunities, and order management.
  • Analytics ? Get real-time visibility to key performance indicators for sales and marketing, which can help you make quick, effective decisions; generate and convert more leads; track opportunities; and close more deals.
  • Marketing ? Align marketing processes, drive customer demand, and increase marketing ROI using functionality that helps to better manage target groups, campaigns and leads.

By combining industry best practices together with itelligence preconfigured and comprehensive industry solutions, companies can now manage their customers and their sales effectiveness together with business operations in one easy-to-use solution.

Final Thoughts

Delivering great customer service is still very possible, and it can make or break your business. The tools must be highly effective.

IT decision makers must be willing to invest the time in finding the right solution and approach integration with their ERP system, meeting specific business needs and objectives. SAP and itelligence are making it easier than ever for companies to quickly benefit from intuitive user experiences with wider and better access to more powerful, actionable data than ever before.

Is your company ready to make its customer service great?? How can we help you take it to the next level???

Legal Theory Blog: Buchhandler-Raphael on Human Dignity ...

Michal Buchhandler-Raphael (Washington and Lee University - School of Law) has posted Drugs, Dignity and Danger: Human Dignity as a Constitutional Constraint to Limit Overcriminalization on SSRN. Here is the abstract:
The American criminal justice system is under tremendous pressures, increasingly collapsing under its heavy weight, thus requiring inevitable change. One notable feature responsible for this broken system is over-criminalization: the scope of criminal law is constantly expanding, making individuals liable to conviction and punishment for an ever-wider range of behaviors. One area where over-criminalization is most notable concerns victimless crimes, namely, individuals who engage in consensual conducts which inflict only harm on themselves but not on third parties, such as prostitution, pornography, sadomasochism, gambling, and most notably, drug crimes.

Despite increasing scholarly critique of the continued criminalization of these behaviors, particularly drug offenses, significant limits on the scope of victimless crimes have not yet been adopted. Two features characterizing criminal law account for this: first, in contrast with criminal procedure, constitutional law has not placed any significant limits on substantive criminal law, and second, there is no coherent theory of criminalization that sets clear boundaries between criminal and non-criminal behaviors.

This article proposes a constitutional constraint to limit criminalization of victimless crimes, and particularly to alleviate the pressures on the criminal justice system emanating from its continuous ?war on drugs." To accomplish this goal, the article explores the concept of human dignity, a fundamental right yet to be invoked in the context of substantive criminal law. The U.S. Supreme Court?s jurisprudence invokes conflicting accounts of human dignity: liberty as dignity, on the one hand, and communitarian virtue as dignity on the other. However, the Court has not yet developed a workable mechanism to reconcile these competing concepts in cases where they directly clash. The article proposes guidelines for balancing these contrasting interests and then applies them to drug crimes, illustrating that adopting such guidelines would result in constraining the scope of substantive criminal law.

Police: Md. teen brought shotgun, vodka to school

PERRY HALL, Md. (AP) ? Police say a 15-year-old accused of shooting a classmate at a suburban Baltimore high school used a double-barreled shotgun that he took from his father's house and drank vodka before the shooting.

Robert Wayne Gladden Jr. has been charged as an adult with attempted murder and first-degree assault in the shooting, which left a 17-year-old classmate critically wounded.

Baltimore County Police Chief James Johnson says Gladden came to school Monday with a bottle of vodka, a disassembled shotgun and 21 rounds of ammunition. He says the shotgun was more than 40 years old.

Johnson says he's aware of reports that Gladden had been bullied, but he says Gladden has not indicated to detectives that bullying was a motive.

LG Spectrum 2 caught posing with docks and cases

LG Spectrum 2 pictured with accessories

At this point, there isn't much mystery left surrounding the LG VS930, aka Spectrum 2 for Verizon. Despite the onslaught of rumored specs, however, we still haven't seen much in the way of the phone's accessories. That has all changed now, as we've gotten our hands on a few smallish images of the new Spectrum residing in a car dock, home dock and a rugged-looking protective case. We're still waiting on an official announcement along with availability and pricing (though we imagine all three details will come at the same time), but we try to convince ourselves that each new leak is a step closer to reality.

Wet weather won't stop GOP Convention protesters

A few hundred protesters from groups like Occupy Wall Street and Code Pink say Tropical Storm Issac, expected to reach hurricane-force Tuesday, won't keep them away from the Republican National Convention.

By Tamara Lush,?Associated Press / August 26, 2012

John Penley (c.) of New York City smokes a cigarette where protesters have set up a camp dubbed "Romneyville" in a restricted area near the site where the Republican National Convention will be held in Tampa, on August 25. Protesters say Tropical Storm Issac will not deter them.

The few hundred protesters gathered under rainy skies in a park about a half-mile from the GOP convention on Sunday said an impending hurricane that is supposed to dump heavy rains on Tampa won't deter them from trying to get out their message that America needs to change, especially for the middle class.

Giant blocks of ice spelling out the words "middle class" are melting on a warm, sticky day. Occupy protesters say it represents the melting away of the middle class in America.

That message rings true for 52-year-old Tom Gaurapp and Cheryl Landecker from Freeport, Ill. Both worked for Sensata Technologies in the city of some 25,000 people and say 170 jobs there, including their own, were outsourced to China. Occupy is a left-leaning protest group of people in their mid-20s who generally believe that the financial system is stacked against a majority of people.

Gaurapp and Landecker say that just a few years ago, they never would have considered joining such a protest.

"But then again, we wouldn't have dreamed our jobs would have gone to China," Gaurapp said.

Tropical Storm Isaac is expected to become a dangerous Category 2 hurricane by the time it makes land over the northern Gulf Coast sometime late Tuesday or early Wednesday. Tampa is expected to feel the brunt of the storm with heavy rainfall on Monday. The forecast caused Republicans to postpone their convention activities on Monday's opening day and not that many delegates seemed to be around Sunday to see the protesters.

The protests stayed small also by mid-afternoon.

The weather isn't a deterrent to 52 year-old Donald Butner, who says he's been sleeping at the Occupy camp in Tampa for a few months and that "we're here, baby, rain or shine. The weather is going to do what it is going to do."

The protesters chanted "we are the 99 percent" and carried homemade signs. The 99 percent refers to the group's message that most don't share in the wealth of America. Often, younger people make up the Occupy protests, but in Tampa, several older people joined the marchers.

That included the 54-year-old Landecker , who spoke to the group as rain started falling.

"These businesses have put corporate greed over everything else. If they can do it to us, they can do it to anybody," Landecker said.

Though protesters vow to stay put, if the weather threatens their safety or that of visitors on the streets, police officers will use public address systems and go person-to-person to warn them to leave, said Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor.

"As it is right now, there will be high winds and there will be rain but it's not going to be something that is going to prohibit anyone from doing what they want to do out on the streets," Castor said. "If it changes ... and it becomes an issue of public safety, we will order people into shelters."

About 50 people, from Occupy Wall Street and Code Pink groups, marched from the park about two blocks to the Tampa theater where the Faith and Freedom Coalition was holding an event. The protesters waved signs in front of people waiting to get into the theater, and seven of them lay down in front of the entrance. Other protesters covered them in a red cloth.

They were on the ground for about five minutes. When police asked them to move, they did, and then marched back to the park.

Code Pink is a women-focused group pushing to end the U.S.-led wars abroad. They held signs including, "Vagina. If you can't say it, don't legislate it," and "GOP, respect women."

"I'm completely opposed to the Ralph Reed agenda of the war on women," said Rae Abileah, 29, of San Francisco. Reed started the Faith and Freedom Coalition, which among other causes is against abortion.

Analysis: South Africa mine killings could hurt Zuma ahead of vote

MARIKANA, South Africa (Reuters) - South African's President Jacob Zuma rose to power as a man of the people but seemed a world away from the masses when he stood in a suit under a parasol to speak to destitute miners about the deadliest police killing since apartheid ended.

The deaths of 44 in a labor dispute this month at Lonmin's Marikana mine, including 34 armed miners shot by police, could undermine Zuma's populist appeal and threaten his chances in a December vote where he seeks re-election as the leader of the party that dominates politics.

Zuma's critics say the day last week he spoke to miners for a few minutes under the blazing sun showed him more beholden to special interest groups than to millions of South Africans waiting for him to ease poverty.

He took more time to speak to Lonmin's executives than miners and then left the mine to dance in front of cameras at a ruling African National Congress event, despite declaring a week of mourning.

"Our government is becoming a pig that is eating its own children," Julius Malema, the ANC Youth League expelled from the ruling party after crossing swords with Zuma, said at a memorial service on Thursday for the victims.

"Our government is failing to intervene in mines because our leaders are involved in mines," Malema said.

It is too early to tell how much damage Zuma will suffer from the killings at the Marikana mine, northwest of Johannesburg, but the president's foes have been using the event to store ammunition before December's vote.

"The fact that Zuma ordered police to bring the Lonmin strike under control has exposed him to accusations of complicity in the miners' deaths," Mark Rosenberg wrote in a note for the political risk consultancy Eurasia Group.

BUMPY ROAD

Banished from the ANC, Malema is in a position to say things ANC leaders cannot in public because the party prefers to confine debate to behind closed doors. It also makes Malema influential to those who want to unseat Zuma.

The incident, dubbed by local media the "Marikana Massacre" has hit the base of support that brought Zuma to power, widening a divide between him and his former backers in the Youth League.

The staunch support Zuma once had from the powerful COSATU labor federation has also been called into question with its flagship group, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), finding itself isolated by miners who say it has lost its focus on workers by cozying up to the ANC and mining giants.

Prior to the killings, Zuma seemed headed to a victory at the ANC election, which would put him in a position to remain as South Africa's president until 2019.

While he is still in the driver's seat, the road has become a lot bumpier.

"Before Lonmin, with NUM in his corner, the race was going to be easy but it's going to be difficult to get a clear consensus from COSATU when there are big people who are anti-Zuma," said a senior union official campaigning for Zuma's re-election who did not want to be named.

Nominations for the race open in October and the ANC forbids potential candidates from lobbying ahead of time.

Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe is the most viable choice. Insiders say the man who served as caretaker president for eight months from September 2008 when the ANC recalled former President Thabo Mbeki to make way for Zuma, will only raise his hand if he knows he can win.

Before Marikana, Zuma's supporters are believed to have courted Cyril Ramaphosa, the former leader of NUM who is now an ANC heavyweight and one of the country's richest businessmen - offering him the position of deputy president.

The former labor leader and anti-apartheid activist Ramaphosa now sits on Lonmin's board as a non-executive director and has been called a sellout by Zuma's critics, such as former youth leader Malema.

"It's a different ball game now and Cyril is tainted," the Zuma campaign official said.

CRACKS IN SOCIETY

The incident has also laid bare cracks in society with an electorate complaining of growing levels of income inequality and the government's slow pace in addressing apartheid-era infrastructure backlogs in housing, education and healthcare.

Unemployment has inched up under Zuma while the country has slipped in Transparency International's rankings of perceived corruption. Several Zuma allies are being probed on suspicion of using political connections to line their pockets.

COSATU Secretary General Zwelinzima Vavi, a potential kingmaker and critic of what he calls a "predatory elite" among the political class, may be looking to garner support from unions in the federation to oppose Zuma's re-election, a senior union official said.

"Something like this (Marikana) is what Vavi and his followers were waiting for. It shows exactly what they were saying," the official said.

COSATU, with 2 million members and in a governing alliance with the ANC, has been a powerful vote gathering machine for the ruling party.

"Those who want to unseat Zuma could not ask for anything better," said a member of the ANC's national executive committee.

Wise Student - Interfaith Wedding Rabbi's Blog: Security in ...

Last Sunday I officiated Brooke and Eric's wedding in Arlington, Texas. I referred to a reading I read before my remarks. Here is the reading from the writings of Anne Morrow Lindbergh:

When you love someone, you do not love them all the time, in exactly the same way, from moment to moment. It is an impossibility, it is even a lie to pretend to. And yet this is exactly what most of us demand. We have so little faith in the ebb and flow of life, of love, of relationships. We leap at the flow of the tide and resist in terror its ebb. We are afraid it will never return. We insist on permanency, on duration, on continuity; when the only continuity possible in life, as in love, is in growth, in fluidity, in freedom, in the sense that the dancers are free, barely touching as they pass, but partners in the same pattern.

The only real security is not in owning or possessing, not in demanding or expecting, not in hoping even. Security in a relationship lies neither in looking back to what it was in nostalgia; nor forward to what it might be in dread or anticipation, but living in the present relationship and accepting it as it is now. For relationships, too, must be like islands. One must accept them for what they are here and now, within their limits. Islands, surrounded and interrupted by the sea, are continually visited and abandoned by the tides. One must accept the security of the winged life, of the ebb and flow, of intermittency.

Here are my remarks:

I use a wonderful book to help couples choose reading for their ceremony, "Celebrating Interfaith Marriages" by Rabbi Devon Lerner. It has a whole chapter with about thirty five modern poetry and prose readings. Brooke and Eric are the first to choose this reading. When they did in one of our meetings, I made a mental note of that as an interesting fact.

Then I sat down to write this ceremony, and I read this reading in depth. I was struck by how deep, realistic, and multi-layered it was. What really hit me was how much this reading fit with the couple that chose it, how much "Brooke and Eric" there was here.

You see, many people in our middle class society have their life charted out in a fairly predictable fashion. They look for and find security in the familiar, the regular, the close to home. In the process, they clip their own wings, settle for something less than what they dreamt of, and learning and curiosity lie dormant in them.

Not Brooke and Eric, though. Listen again to the final words of the reading: "One must accept the security of the winged life, of the ebb and flow, of intermittency." Both Brooke and Eric have managed not to succumb to the deadening security that comes from just settling. They find security in spreading their wings as individuals and as a couple. They find security in learning, in trying new things, in visiting new places. They find security in the question, not the answer; in the intermittent, not the constant; in the journey, not the destination.

Brooke and Eric, thank you for this wonderful insight. May you indeed always remember that, "The only continuity possible in life, as in love, is in growth, in fluidity, in freedom."

The bumping and banging is back at Bristol

BRISTOL, Tenn. (AP) ? With a two-handed toss of his helmet, Tony Stewart brought back everything that had been missing at Bristol Motor Speedway.

It was the rock 'em, sock 'em style of racing that made the Tennessee bullring the toughest ticket in NASCAR, and fans fill the place for 55 consecutive races hoping to see bumping and banging on the track and the off-track drama it created.

Progressive banking added in 2007 diluted the action, and fans turned their backs on Bristol in droves. Yet another disappointing crowd in March was the final straw for track owner Bruton Smith, who ordered changes to the track surface in the hopes the action would pick up and the fans would return.

He got exactly what he wanted Saturday night, even if his idea didn't go exactly according to plan.

Tempers flared again at Bristol ? the boiling point coming when Stewart heaved his helmet at Matt Kenseth's car after the two wrecked racing for the lead ? and the action on track picked up enough to satisfy most fans.

Five-time Bristol winner Jeff Gordon, who watched some of Bristol's greatest races from the spotter stand before he began his Cup career, thought Saturday night looked a lot like old Bristol.

"Even though it was really tough to pass, it just reminded me of old school Bristol," Gordon said. "I think it was a success and I certainly had a lot of fun. I say they grind the whole place. Sounds awesome. I hope they do that next time."

Believing the progressive banking had created too many lanes for drivers to use, Smith ordered the top groove to be ground down at Bristol. His desired effect was a tighter track that forced drivers to run around the bottom and use their bumpers to move cars out of their way.

They had to use their bumpers, but it was at the top of the track where the action occurred. The new top groove picked up rubber as the race progressed, and the grip in the high line was too attractive for drivers to ignore.

Denny Hamlin, who picked up his first Bristol victory, thought the racing was similar to years past.

"We were all running in a line and just waiting on the next guy to screw up to get around," he said. "That's what you had with the old Bristol. That's how we had to race. I don't think we saw as much side-by-side racing, but you didn't see side-by-side racing with the old Bristol. You just saw a bunch of cars in line waiting on someone to get knocked out of the way or mess up and that's the same thing we had."

With it came the return of a vintage Stewart reaction following his accident with Kenseth.

The three-time series champion had rallied from a lap down to run for the lead with Kenseth, but after the two came close to wrecking for at least an entire lap, they finally collided for reasons neither agreed upon. Stewart showed his displeasure by tossing his helmet at Kenseth's car, and promising a rocky ride the rest of the season.

"I'm going to run over him every chance I've got from now 'til the end of the year, every chance I've got," Stewart said.

That's the kind of responses fans expect at Bristol, where Dale Jarrett in 1993 threw his helmet at Bobby Hillin Jr.'s car. Ward Burton once threw his heel guards at Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jimmie Johnson made an obscene gesture, Gordon shoved Kenseth, Kevin Harvick charged after Greg Biffle, and, oh, the late Dale Earnhardt spun Terry Labonte in an effort to "rattle his cage."

On Saturday night, even Danica Patrick got into the action, angrily wagging her finger at Regan Smith after contact from him caused a race-ending wreck after she'd worked her way to 19th.

"We were just racing hard, this is Bristol, this is why people love this track because you see a lot of that, you see tempers flare," Patrick said.

It was the perfect kickoff for the final push to set the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship field.

Hamlin's win was his third of the season, and it created a four-way tie for most wins in the series. Should nothing give over the next two races between Hamlin, Johnson, Stewart and Brad Keselowski, there'd be a logjam for the top seed in the 10-race Chase.

And the race is still on for the final two wild card spots.

A wreck with Juan Pablo Montoya was devastating for Ryan Newman, who slipped out of contention for one of the two wild card berths. Headed into next Sunday's race at Atlanta, Kasey Kahne is still holding steady for one of the spots. Kyle Busch moved into position for the second one, and he leads Gordon by 16 points. Newman fell to fourth in the wild card standings, 19 points behind Busch.

And Carl Edwards, who lost the championship to Stewart last year on a tie-breaker, is still trying to find a way into the Chase.

Hamlin was well aware of the repercussions as he chased down Edwards on the track, using a vintage "slide job" pass of Edwards to take the lead. Then he successfully defended Edwards' attempt to use a crossover to take the lead back, and Hamlin preserved a win that helped him and Busch, his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate.

Gordon, who finished third, also had an eye on the standings.

"If Carl had won or Kyle had won, it would have gotten us way behind, so we kept ourselves in the battle for it," Gordon said. "We've got two more opportunities and they're good opportunities. I'm a little disappointed myself because I think we had the car and we had the track position and I got loose on new tires on that one run when we really had the guys I felt we had to beat behind us."

Families Afield Helps Boost Hunter Numbers

EDGEFIELD, S.C. ??As hunters anticipate autumn?s first trips afield, a national effort to remove barriers for youth and novice hunters, Families Afield, has helped reverse a decade-long decline in hunting participation.

The Department of the Interior recently released findings from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS) 2011 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife Recreation study. More than 90 million Americans participated in wildlife-related recreation with a 9% overall increase in hunting participation from 12.5 million hunters in 2006 to 13.7 million in 2011 ? welcome news to the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF), U.S. Sportsmen?s Alliance and National Shooting Sports Foundation.

In 2004, the three organizations partnered to start Families Afield after a Youth Hunting Report showed a downward trend in hunter recruitment and retention numbers. To date, the initiative has been instrumental in bringing positive legislative change to 33 states, resulting in more than 782,000 new hunters.

?We?re proud of Families Afield?s success thus far,? said George C. Thornton, NWTF CEO. ?But we?re as committed as ever to introducing more youth to the outdoors and removing hunting restrictions in this country. America?s wildlife populations and rich hunting tradition depend upon it.?

NWTF?s dedicated volunteers work to bring new hunters and conservationists into the fold ? about 100,000 every year ? through its outdoor education events and Women in the Outdoors, Wheelin? Sportsmen and JAKES youth outreach programs.

The USFWS study also identified wildlife-related recreation as an important catalyst for economic growth, with outdoor enthusiasts spending $145 billion on wildlife recreation in 2011. Hunting-related expenditures alone increased 33% as hunters spent $34 billion on trips, licenses and other associated expenses.

Hunting fees and excise taxes ?paid by hunters and shooters ? underwrite much of the country?s habitat and conservation programs.

?No other civilization or nation has lost their wildlife resources and then rebuilt them like we have. Federal excise taxes on the sale of firearms and ammunition, matched three to one by hunting license dollars, funded the comeback of wildlife in this country. That restoration was made possible by dedicated hunters,? said James Earl Kennamer, Ph. D., NWTF chief conservation officer.

The NWTF is the leader in upland wildlife habitat conservation in North America. A nonprofit organization dedicated to conserving the wild turkey and preserving our hunting heritage, the NWTF and its volunteers work closely with state, federal and provincial wildlife agencies and other partners.

Through these dynamic partnerships, the NWTF and its members helped restore wild turkey populations throughout North America, spending more than $372 million to conserve 17 million acres of habitat.

For more information about the NWTF, visit www.nwtf.org or call (800) THE-NWTF.

Somm Gregory Alonzo: Dolcetto Dogliani ? My Daily Drinker ...

Italy?s Piedmont region is surrounded on three sides by the majestic alps. From striking mountain peaks to rolling hills, long summer days, and refreshing nights, this is a land of? noble of wines. In fact, Italy is a land of a multitude of wines. Over the years I have learned that the count ranges from 2000-3500. Oftentimes when I quote these numbers I am also reminded that only about 700 varietals are used to produce wines of repute.

Today I am joined by fellow sommelier and longtime friend, Serena Dutto. She is a graduate of Italy?s prestigious, Associazione Italia Sommelier (AIS). Serena invited me to her hometown of Dogliani, in the Cuneo region, to experience some of the local wines. Serena is also fluent in the local dialects of Piedmontese and Occitan. I know that the week will not only be filled with interesting wines, but a strong dose of local history and Serena?s flair for the lifestyle of Piedmontese.

From our terrace view of the Osteria Vineria il Torchio, we are free to enjoy the tranquility of this lovely town of less than 5000 people. Dogliani dates back to the 16th century, and wine cultivation in the surrounding hills, dates back to pre-Roman times. A time when the Etruscans were the dominate peoples.

?I love to sit here, drink wine, and thank God I returned home.? Serena quietly smiled.

?Come now, Rome could not have been all that bad,? I queried. ?After all you were a sommelier in one of the ?Eternal City?s? finest restaurants.

Serena patted me on the hand and changed the subject, ?Let?s drink some wine.?

Sensing her discomfort and reluctance to further discuss the topic, I nodded in agreement. ?Dolcetto??

?Dolcetto Dogliani,? Serena was quick to correct me.

Dolcetto is a lovely wine that dates back to the late 16th century. It is a black wine grape varietal grown throughout the Piedmont region. The translation means ?little sweet one.? I first discovered Dolcetto? back in my university days at the Claremont Colleges. Unfortunately, I misunderstood the name, I assumed it was sweet. Since my date loved sweet wine, I thought I?d be a hit. She did not care for the wine and I did not fair much better. However, I found my daily drinker. Since then, I have been having a long running love affair with my ?little sweet one.?

No one is quite sure how the name Dolcetto came about. Certainly not with regard to the wine?s sugar levels. Dolcetto is typically dry. The wine can be tannic and fruity, and drinks best after 1 to 2 years after release. Serena, along with the majority of the local population believe that the name Dolcetto is derived from the hills where the vine thrives.

?Gregorio,? she paused to collect her thoughts. ?We need to explain to our readers why Dolcetto Dogliani is simply the best.?

When most Americans are first introduced to Dolcetto, oftentimes their first exposure is to the wines of D?Alba. Though this is area is renown for viticulture, the Dolcetto that is produced is just not as bold as the wines of Dogliani. Many of the wines of Dogliani are ?Superiore.? A designation that pertains to wines aged a minimum of 14 months. Wines from D?Alba are meant to be drunk young and are an excellent choice for pizza and pasta dishes.

?Ah, our food and our first wine has arrived.? Serena looked over our table ensuring that all was just as she instructed. To my delight, there was an array of salty cured meats, pungent cheeses, and Serena?s favorite, tajamin. This is a local pasta from Langhe, and found more often in homes rather than restaurants.

?What is our first selection??

?I know you will be pleased with this one,? Serena smiled with anticipation. ?A Romana Carlo 2003.? She then filled our glasses and toasted, ?Cin cin. Did you know that this informal toast originates from the sound that the two glasses make when they are touched together??

?But of course,? I smiled. ?The wine is excellent. This single-vineyard Dolcetto is concentrated and juicy.?

?I agree, a most impressive wine. I especially like the way the raspberry and black cherry flavors have rounded out.?

I smiled in agreement. ?An earthy wine indeed. The finely polished tannins and good palate length make for a sophisticated mouthfeel. The finish is strikingly long and textured with excellent depth of flavor. I?d say about 13.5%?

?Gregorio, I think you will be equally pleased with our second selection,? Serena was quick to present the bottle. ? A Poderi Luigi Einaudi 2003.?

This is a top-notch Dolcetto. Virtually every year the wines of Einaudi feature masses of? bold dark fruit. Black cherries, plums, and some hints of spice.?

?I also pick up the hint of cinnamon and clove. There are also some tarry notes that I know you enjoy,? Serena smiled.

?This is a big , full-bodied tannic Dolcetto at 13% alcohol and drinks very well.?

?Luigi Einaudi is the oldest wine-making company in Dogliani. They have been making interesting wines since they bought the San Giancomo estate back in 1897.?

?Interesting,? I nodded in approval. ?What is our final selection??

?Our first wine would be priced at under $20 a bottle. My second choice would be closer to $30 per bottle. I decided to not concern myself with price on our final selection.?

Now I was intrigued. Sitting at the edge of my seat, I could hardly wait to see what Serena had selected for our enjoyment.

?I selected? a Poderi Luigi Einudi 2006 I Filari.?

This is an exceptional expression of Dolcetto. The wine is filled with licorice and earthy aromas. The palate is somewhat intense and laced with boysenberry flavors that linger on the long finish. This wine is 14% alcohol and would definitely benefit from a couple of years of aging.

Being quite familiar with this wine I flashed Serena a quick smile. ?Not overly expensive. I?d say about $45 a bottle.?

?Remember Gregorio, the average person is buying Dolcetto as a daily drinker or a wine to go with pizza and pasta,? Serena said flatly.

?True, but over the past decade Dolcetto has gained in repute.?

?Possibly, I just feel that someone who is interested in the wines of Piedmont will always???? think first of Barolo or possibly Barbaresco.? Serena?s tone bordered on insistent.

?You forget that as much as I love Barolo, I first discovered Dolcetto.?

Serena flashed me a quick grin. ?I think you discovered Dolcetto before you could afford Barolo.?

Joining her merriment, I nodded in agreement. ?Shall we make a move??

?I feel like eating some torta dei tetti and introducing you to some of our more obscure local wines.?

?But that my friends is a different story ?

Next space tourist: Singer Sarah Brightman?

British singer Sarah Brightman may be the next paying passenger to ride a Russian rocket to the International Space Station, sources familiar with the negotiations said Wednesday.

If the trip happens, Brightman, 52, would make the journey in 2015, the Interfax news agency reported, citing an unidentified official in the Russian space industry. A source familiar with Brightman's side of the negotiations confirmed to NBC News that talks were under way, but stressed that they were at an early stage.

Assuming the negotiations are successful, Brightman would be the first paying orbital space passenger since Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberte, who donned a red clown's nose for his 2009 trip to the space station.

Russia has sent seven private passengers to the space station, with the reported price tags escalating from $20 million to more than $40 million. California investment manager Dennis Tito was the first to make the journey in 2001.

Seats on the three-person Soyuz capsules have become scarce since NASA retired its space shuttles last year, leaving Russian rockets as the only craft capable of carrying crews to the station for now.

Brightman ? who rose to fame starring in the original London and New York casts of "The Phantom of the Opera" ? visited Russia about a month ago and received the approval of a medical commission to begin training at the Cosmonaut Training Center outside Moscow, the source added.

She was married to composer Andrew Lloyd Webber in the 1980s and pursued a chart-topping solo career after their divorce, bringing classical music to a broader audience and selling millions of records along the way. Estimates of her net worth have ranged from $45 million to $52 million and beyond.

Virginia-based Space Adventures has organized trips to the space station for deep-pocketed passengers in the past, but representatives of the company have not commented publicly on the prospects for future trips.

Sources have said the space station's partners are considering a plan to send two spacefliers into orbit in 2015 for almost a year, instead of the usual six months. The logistics involved in that experiment would open up an opportunity for two short-term visitors to the station ? visitors who could include paying passengers such as Brightman.

The Russian space agency said on Wednesday that it supported the idea of gradually extending expeditions to the station to a year, but that no decision had yet been made.

This report includes information from Reuters and NBC News.

Rihanna Interview with Oprah Winfrey Causes Social Media Backlash

rihanna interview with oprah

Rihanna sat down with Oprah to open up about different aspects of her life, including her relationship with Chris Brown. She spoke on the domestic violence incident, her current feelings towards Chris, and the current status of their relationship. ?To check the entire Rihanna interview with Oprah, click on the link below:

Rihanna Interview On Oprah: Next Chapter

I didn?t catch the interview at real time, but I saw the commentary on social media in reagrds to her perspective that she articulated to Oprah. Of course everyone has an opinion, and many people expressed disgust, disappointment, and distress at some of her comments. I wanted to highlight a few quotes from the interview that particularly angered some (props to the homie Somya on the quote aggregation).

?We?ve been working on our friendship again. Now we?re very, very close friends. We built a trust again. We love each other and probably always will? I?m single but we?ve maintained a very close friendship?-On her current relationship with Chris.

The reaction I monitored from the social media community was outrage. How can you be friends with a man who beat your ass? Why would you even consider a friendship with him? She has to be damaged in some way right? I don?t think this is the case. Throughout life, we have been wronged by friends, family, and associates. Whether they hurt us physically or emotionally, they betrayed our trust and did us wrong. Think about the dude that bullied kids, and years later bully-er and bully-ee become friends. Think about that ex who cheated on you and embarrassed you in front of friends and family. Some people can consider that a phase in life and can look past it to salvage a previous relationship. ?This is what Robyn is doing here. She obviously values the friendship they had prior to the altercation, and we don?t know the extent of their relationship, so why judge?

Sidebar: This is hilarious

?It?s awkward. It?s awkward because I still love him?My stomach drops and I have to maintain this poker face and not let it get to the outer part of me. I have to maintain that and suppress it?-on having funny feelings when she still sees Chris Brown (as recent as this summer in St. Tropez)

?Absolutely. I think he was the love of my life. He was the first love. I see that he loved me the same way. We were very young and very spontaneous. We ran free; we ran wild. We were falling in love and going at a really rapid pace that we forgot about ourselves?-Rihanna reveals that Chris Brown was a true love of her life.

Some people couldn?t understand how she could still love a man who domestically abused her. They feel that ?something is wrong with her? for still loving Chris. I applaud and commend her for keeping it real. How many times do we deny our true feelings in love and in general? We will claim we have 0% love for an ex, but still feel the heart palpitations and uneasiness when we see them on Facebook or at an event with mutual acquaintances. We will have an immediate emotional reaction when we see them with someone new, whether the relationship ended 5 days or 5 years ago. It may be minor or major, but it will be there. It?s normal to feel this way when you were involved in a serious relationship. It?s also normal to carry feelings of bitterness or anger for an ex when you were treated wrong in any way. ?To me, it?s more therapeutic to acknowledge those feelings, be real, and address them accordingly. It doesn?t make her damaged to me, it makes her human.? My dude @RaeHolliday Summed up my feelings on Rihanna?s words perfectly:

We are quick to judge people who do certain things in their relationships or former relationships. We will say what they should do, but fail to remember that we might not have fared any better in similar circumstances. We have beliefs on forgiveness yet chastise others for forgiving. It?s human nature to forgive and to criticize one in the same. I don?t fault anyone for following their feelings, but I do commend them for recognizing how they feel, not fronting, and hopefully addressing them.

What?s your thoughts SBMNation?
