Google has just released the app Ingress?and this game utilizes location-based services and augmented-reality technology to provide a massively multiplayer world.?
The app is available on Android right now on an invite-only request and it will eventually be coming to the iPhone.?According to AllThingsD, the game revolves around walking around real-world paths to gain energy within the game. You'll likely have to do battle within the game with other forces, and collaborating with others looks like it can be done in the game and in real life.?
Ingress may seem like a weird project for Google, but when you think about it, it makes a lot of sense. The game revolves around ubiquitous computing: using all of your phone's always-on sensors - building a digital world around you. Ingress was created by Niantic Labs, which is owned by Google, and in many ways, I see this as a Trojan Horse for Google's larger mobile advertising ambitions.?
Ingress will work in physical products and stores (read: advertising) in the game. You could easily see that visiting one of the advertising partners' stores could have big benefits in the game. If you strip out the artwork and gaming aesthetics, Ingress may provide the basis for location-based ads and collaborating for a variety of Google products.?
You can download the Ingress app for Android from the Play Store here?but you will need an invite to play. Watch the trailer below for a sneak peek.?
