Former Ireland international Stephen Carr has today formally announced his retirement from the game.

The 36 year-old full-back who has spent the last four and a half years at Birmingham City announced his decision today on the club website after failing to make a single appearance during this campaign due to a knee injury suffered last year.
He said that three operations in 18 months could not solve the problem and now was the time to bow out.
?I am going on 37 and now is the time to bow out,? he said on the club?s site.
?I felt OK in pre-season but unfortunately my knee just crumbled away. It was unfortunate for me and the club. We knew there was a chance something could happen, but we didn't think it would be that early. It just wasn't meant to be in the end.?
This is the second time he has called it quits after making a U-turn in 2009 and helping Birmingham gain promotion to the Premier League before also taking over the skipper?s armband, but this time there will be no reversing the decision.
?The last time I stopped playing I was 31 and it was because I couldn't get a club. This time it?s different.?
The Dubliner is moving to Spain with his family with a number of business interests he is hoping to attend to and will retire with more than 500 first-team appearances for Tottenham, Newcastle and Birmingham as well as 44 international caps.
At the peak of his powers while at White Hart Lane, he was named in the Premier League Team of the Season in 2001 and 2003. A real threat going forward, he didn?t get on the scoresheet too often, but when he did they were pretty special.
Man. Utd, 1999
Sunderland, 2000
We wish him well in his retirement.
