Lester wins second Academic All-America award

TOWSON, Md. (June 5, 2013) - Women's hockey defenceman Fiona Lester of Peterborough, Ont., has been named to the 2013 Capitol One Academic All-America College Division at-large first team as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

The Capital One College Division Academic All-America men's and women's at-large teams are comprised of student-athletes from NAIA, Canadian and two-year institutions.?

The at-large program for the Capital One Academic All-America program includes the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis, water polo for both men and women; bowling, crew and field hockey for women; and volleyball and wrestling for men.

Lester, a biology and mathematics major who holds a 3.90 G.P.A., was named to the first team for the second consecutive year after becoming just the second Laurier athlete to earn the honour following football player Dillon Heap of Waterloo, Ont., back in 2010. She is the only Canadian student-athlete to earn first team honours this year and one of only two CIS athletes among the three Academic All-America teams.

Laurier's team captain last season, Lester enjoyed another excellent season for the Hawks as she helped lead the team to a 21-2-3 record, good for first place in the OUA. The fourth year defenceman tallied a career-best seven goals and 12 assists to finish third in the conference in defenceman scoring with 19 points. Those numbers helped her earn OUA First Team All-Star honours for the second time in her career.

A three-time CIS Academic All-Canadian, Lester was also recognized in 2012-13 as the Oustanding Woman of Laurier for her academic and athletic success along with her work in the community. She was also honoured for the second consecutive year with the Luke Fusco Academic Athletic Achievement Award at Laurier's annual Athletic Banquet.

The 15 members of the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America College Division At-Large women's first team have an average G.P.A. of 3.84.?
