Why eHarmony sets the pace in Online dating | Love, Sex ...

There comes a time when love doesn?t want to wait anymore. You strongly feel it?s your time to find a man or a woman of your dreams. But finding your Mr. Right or Miss Right doesn?t always come easy. It involves your absolute commitment. And your attitude has to be directed towards the right direction. It doesn?t matter how many people in your life have come and left, organizing the most picture-perfect weddings as if they were out to provoke you. Most of your friends may have easily, or so you think, got their soul-mates, while you are still waiting for your opportune time. But you are no different than they are and you can purpose to get things rolling by trying online dating with eHarmony, one of the world?s most respected online dating sites. Being among the most organized dating sites, eHarmony has brought joy to many singles in the United States, Europe and other parts of the world as well. You can too find your relationship match and be part of the statistics.

?

But just before you begin the process of online dating registration with eHarmony, you need to be clear on a number of things. Many people have been frustrated in online dating because they get into it with a negative attitude. You don?t expect anything you are reserved about to work out for you. So even before you sign up for love at eHarmony, you have to have a positive mentality and really get to believe that it?s possible to get an ideal date online. You can take your time to first read testimonials about many people who have succeeded in finding love online. Let that build your hope and you?ll soon begin to dream of your success in finding a matching partner with eHarmony.

As a responsible dating site, eHarmony takes the initiative of guiding you in the necessary steps by first helping you discover your strong points of attraction. You?ll also be able to predict what type of potential partners you are likely to find in your searches. The detailed process may take a little of your time but you won?t regret it as you?ll soon realize how much helpful it turns out to be in guiding you through to the most relevant partners.

Although meeting new persons, especially in dating can be exiting, your personal judgment must at all times guide you and you ought to always be vigilant when corresponding with strangers. There is no doubt that most of the members are seeking for love, but there could be some elements with evil motives or those with scary criminal records. In spite of efforts that such online dating sites as eHarmony puts in place to scrutinize their members, some people may not tell the truth about themselves and you?ve got to always be conscious.

Being sensitive when meeting new people in any online dating site can save you a lot of distress. Make sure your search for love at eHarmony is not put into jeopardy by some ill-willed elements using the dating site by answering some of these questions.

Does your potential date suddenly opt to communicate with you using private means away from the eHarmony?s messaging services?

Does he or she tell stories that at one point involve them in distress or a disaster such as being involved in an accident, sick (one of his/her friends calls to tell you they are in a comma) or wrongly arrested by authorities and requests for money to help them out of such situations?

Is he or she seemingly in a hurry for relationship ? every time pushing you to give in or reveal some personal information that you are feeling a bit uncomfortable with?

Does he or she purport to be handling a lot of money, promises gifts and other goodies in your early stages of relationship?

If you have any reason to suspect that your potential match at eHarmony or anywhere else is out for other things than love ? especially your money, you need to follow your instincts, report them to the site administrators and discontinue your correspondence.

Remember finding love anywhere, including online, even on such reputed sites such as eHarmony requires patience and diligence and you ought to persist until you get your match. Don?t forget that being positive is one of the key values in finding your match. The fact that one person is not interested in you doesn?t mean you are not attractive. It just means they are not the best matches for you.

Apple assembly line gets pay raise, fewer hours

NEW YORK (AP) ? Chinese workers who often spend more than 60 hours per week assembling iPhones and iPads will have their overtime hours curbed and their pay increased after a labor auditor hired by Apple Inc. inspected their factories.

The Fair Labor Association says Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., the Taiwanese company also known as Foxconn that runs the factories in China, is committing to a reduction of weekly work time to 49 hours, the legal Chinese maximum.

That limit is routinely ignored in factories throughout China. Auret van Heerden, CEO of the Fair Labor Association, said Foxconn is the first Chinese company to commit to following the legal standard.

Apple's and FLA's own guidelines call for work weeks of 60 hours or less.

Foxconn's moves are likely to have an impact across the global technology industry. The company employs 1.2 million workers in China to assemble products for Apple, Microsoft Corp., Hewlett-Packard Co. and other pillars of U.S. technology.

Foxconn's factories are the last step in the process of manufacturing iPhones and other Apple devices, most of which have hundreds of components. Research firm IHS iSuppli estimates that Apple pays $8 for the assembly of a 16-gigabyte iPhone 4S and $188 for its components. It sells the phone wholesale for about $600 to phone companies, which then subsidize it to be able to sell it for $200 with a two-year service contract.

Ricardo Ernst, a professor at Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business, said companies play a risky game when they raise their manufacturing costs because they can be undercut by competitors.

But iSuppli's figures suggest that if Apple were to absorb a Foxconn wage increase that keeps salaries level while cutting average working hours from 60 to 49 per week, it would pay less than $2 extra to have an iPhone made.

Other electronics companies, particularly PC makers such as Dell and HP, earn less profit on what they sell and could see a deeper impact.

Thomas Dinges, an analyst at iSuppli, said Apple's competitors will probably have to accept the price increase too, since it's framed as a moral issue.

"At this point, it's politics. It's not really economics," he said, adding that there are few alternatives to Chinese factories for most of these products.

The FLA auditors visited three Foxconn complexes in February and March: Guanlan and Longhua near the coastal manufacturing hub of Shenzhen, and Chengdu in the inland province of Sichuan. They employ a total of 178,000 workers, with an average age of 23.

Average monthly salaries at the factories ranged from $360 to $455. Foxconn recently raised salaries by up to 25 percent in the second major salary hike in less than two years.

Apple enormous profits ? $13 billion in October-to-December quarter ? have made it the world's most valuable company, worth more than $570 billion. It's also put the spotlight on the way its products are made.

In a one-man Broadway play, actor Mike Daisey told of visiting China and talking to underage and injured Foxconn workers. Public radio program "This American Life" used Daisey's monologue in a show about Foxconn on Jan. 6, but retracted it two weeks ago, saying that Daisey had fabricated key parts of it, including him meeting 13-year-old workers.

The FLA said it didn't find instances of child or forced labor.

Apple has kept a close watch on its suppliers for years and in January took the further step of joining the FLA. The organization has audited overseas suppliers for clothing manufacturers, but Apple was the first electronics company to join. It also commissioned the FLA to produce a special audit of Foxconn's factories.

"Our team has been working for years to educate workers, improve conditions and make Apple's supply chain a model for the industry, which is why we asked the FLA to conduct these audits," Apple said in a statement.

Apple CEO Tim Cook visited a Foxconn factory in Zhengzhou, China, on Wednesday.

The Washington-based FLA has its roots in a 1996 meeting of multinational companies and nonprofits convened by President Clinton, who challenged corporate leaders to improve conditions for garment and shoe workers. Its 19-member board is composed of representatives from member companies, universities and nonprofits like the Global Fairness Initiative. The organization is funded by participating companies.

Labor unions have criticized Apple's use of the FLA, insisting that audits are a "top-down" approach. Foxconn's workers would be better served, they believe, by being able to organize.

"The report will include new promises by Apple that stand to be just as empty as the ones made over the past 5 years," said SumOfUS.org, a coalition of trade unions and consumer groups, ahead of the release of the report.

The FLA found few safety violations, noting that the company had already dealt with problems like blocked fire exits and defective protective gear. It's also taken step to reduce the amount of aluminum dust in the air, after the metal created an explosion at a Foxconn factory in Chengdu last year, killing four workers.

The FLA said Foxconn has been recording only accidents that caused work stoppage but is now committing to recording and addressing all accidents that result in an injury.

Heerden said his auditors found Foxconn workers are the happiest with their jobs when they work 52 hours a week, well below the amount they often put in. Reducing their hours to 49 hours should help Foxconn retain workers in the long run, he said.

The FLA found that many workers at the Foxconn factories want to work even more overtime, so they can make more money. Foxconn told the FLA that it will raise hourly salaries to compensate workers for the reduced hours.

Heerden said that it's common to find workers in developing countries looking for more overtime, rather than less.

"They're often single, they're young, and there's not much to do, so frankly they'd just rather work and save," he said.

The auditors examined one years' worth of payroll and time records at each factory, conducted interviews with some workers and had 35,000 of them fill out anonymous surveys.

Apple has started tracking the working hours of half a million workers in its supply chain, and said that 89 percent of them worked 60 hours or less in February, even though the company was ramping up production of the new iPad. Workers averaged 48 hours per week.

Malian Politicians Slam Military Takeover

A group of prominent politicians in Mali have condemned the military takeover of President Amadou Toumani Toure's government just five weeks before a presidential election in which he was not taking part.

The politicians issued a statement Friday firmly condemning the coup as a ?serious step backwards? for Mali. Presidential candidate Ibrahim Boubakar Keita was one of those who called for an immediate return to normality.

?The constitutional order should be immediately re-established. The electoral calendar must be maintained and the elections must take place at the initial date.''

The African Union earlier said Mali's President Amadou Toumani Toure is safe, at an undisclosed location near the capital Bamako and is being protected by loyalists.

Coup leader Amadou Haya Sanogo said Friday that the military will step down once a new democratically elected president is in place, but he added that it may take any length of time. He said that President Toure would not be harmed, but declined to discuss his whereabouts.

In response, the AU suspended Mali's membership Friday at a meeting of its Peace and Security Council in Addis Ababa.

The United States and European Union also condemned the coup, while the EU and World Bank have both suspended development aid to Mali.

The United States warned Friday it could suspend some of its assistance to Mali if democracy is not restored.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said humanitarian aid, which made up more than half of the $137 million in annual U.S. aid to Mali will not be affected.

?Any U.S. assistance to the government of Mali beyond what we give for humanitarian purposes is at risk if we cannot get back to a democratic situation in the country.?

Soldiers took control of Mali's presidential palace late Wednesday, after expressing anger at President Toure's handling of an ethnic Tuareg rebellion in the north.

The Tuareg rebels pressed Friday with an offensive aimed at taking more government territory in the wake of the unrest.

A leader of the rebel MNLA told VOA that the rebels plan to advance toward areas held by the Malian army, including the towns of Kidal, Timbuktu, and Gao.

MNLA second-in-command Karim ag Matafa said the group wants to remove the government from what the rebels consider Tuareg land.

Our problem is not with a specific government, he says. Our problem is with the occupation of our country.

The coup took place just a few weeks before the president was due to step down at the end of his second term. Elections are scheduled for next month.

Sonny Ugoh, an official with regional bloc ECOWAS, told VOA Thursday the coup heightens insecurity in Mali. Ugoh said ECOWAS had been working with Mali's leaders to try to negotiate an end to the Tuareg uprising.

Well-armed Tuareg separatists started attacking army bases in Mali's desert in January, after many Tuareg fighters returned from Libya.

The United Nations refugee agency says the conflict has uprooted more than 190,000 people in and around Mali. Many soldiers have died in the conflict.

Tuareg nomads have launched periodic uprisings for greater autonomy in Mali and Niger.

greteman: Stories of Objects: On the Possibilities for Fetishism in ...

We make our objects from what we make of our world, and in return they teach us: this is fetishism?s object lesson.

- ???E. L. McCallum

We read this week about the role of stories in our lives. Stories, it seems, for Alberto Manguel in City of Words, are responsible, in part, for our ways of seeing, being, and relating in or to the world. It does not matter if the story is pure fiction or one materially lived out for ?the story materially lived out and the story lived out in the imagination hold equal ranks? (80). The materially lived out story - one experienced by the body and mind is no different from the story imagined by the mind and body. Scientifically, we see the emergence of empirical evidence to support this. Manguel points out via Richard Dawkins that ?in biological terms, imagination is a survival mechanism developed to grant us experiences that, though not rooted in physical reality, serve nevertheless to educate and improve with the same power and efficacy as those that take place in the physical world? (80). And neuroscientists have recently argued about the power of ?literature - fiction - whereby ?brain scans are revealing what happens in our heads when we read a detailed description, an evocative metaphor or an emotional exchange between characters. Stories, this research is showing, stimulate the brain and even change how we act in life.? (Murphy-Paul, 17 March 2012, Your Brain on Fiction)

Stories are central to the human. We might argue that humans are constituted - become subjects - through stories. As Chimamanda Adichie noted in her acclaimed TED Talks lecture ?The Danger of a Single Story? ?stories have been used to dispossess and to malign. But stories can also be used to empower, and to humanize?. Stories as Manguel concludes ?can tell us who we are and what are these hourglasses through which we sift, and suggest ways of imagining a future that, without calling for comfortable happy endings, may offer us ways of remaining alive, together, on this much-abused earth.? (146). Manguel, ends on a rather positive note on the power of stories - noting, however, throughout his argument how stories have been used to construct and negate the other, to dispossess and malign. Who can tell the story, when and how often matters.

What I am interested in for this response is thinking through Manguel as opposed to thinking about Manguel. Specifically, I want to think through how stories - as objects we possess either via our memory (shared, cultural) or via books - illuminate the productive possibility of ?fetishism?. As I have noted before, I have a reading fetish. Often within the popular imagination the ?fetish? is seen as a sexual pathology - one of the paraphilias listed in the DMS IV-TR. Fetishism is viewed as a abnormal relationship between a subject (human) and an object (shoes, feet) whereby the object comes to ?replace? the whole (e.g., another subject). Plus, I am a ?queer theorist? by some people?s definitions so my scholarship seeks to think through sexuality (in all its complexities) to see what it offers us as educators, as humans, in relation to knowledge, pleasure, and desire.

So, as E. L. McCallum argues in her feminist re-evaluation of fetishism - fetishism offers an alternative epistemology (an alternative model of knowledge). There is a promise in fetishism. McCallum - in her history of fetishism - notes its emergence with the ?age of exploration? or what Willinsky taught us to see as the beginning of the European?s ?diving the world?. Fetishism she highlights began in reference to religion (fetish objects), later taken up in Marxist economics (commodities fetishism), but most notably psychoanalysis (sexual fetishism). In all of these operations or uses of ??fetish? ?the definition of fetishism has consistently boiled down to the use of an object to negotiate (usually binary) difference to achieve an immaterial end, whether it be economic gain, cultural prestige, or psychical satisfaction? (x).

Fetishism offers a promise - a promise that seeks to navigate the tensions between subject and object. Stories - as objects - come into contact with subjects - notably in schools - to educate and in that education create tensions and spaces to navigate the anxieties and pleasures of living. Stories - as objects - are something that are ?read?. We ?read? objects - using objects for our own pleasure (pleasure of creating, of learning, of impressing) and how we read matters - as Eve Sedgwick pointed out in her analysis of paranoid and reparative reading practices. McCallum, adds to this, writing that ?a degree of sympathy with the text and a sense of its interpretive openness is required to produce the kind of reading that makes a text blossom? (155).

Creating relationships with texts - with stories - that open up the world to us rather than close the world from us simultaneously open ourselves up to relate to other subjects. If we read sympathetically - not to simplify McCallum too much - helps I would argue to sympathize with others. And as Adichie makes quite clear - having multiple stories as opposed to a single story helps in our constant struggle to recognize the other and be recognized as a subject ourselves. Objects and our relationships with those objects have a significant impact on how we as subjects relate. Objects are not the problem. Objects are a means by which we relate and understand the world.

While fetishism is easy to pathologize, see as problematic, and perhaps causes some sense of dis-ease...such responses, I believe, neglect the inevitability it would seem within the contemporary world of objects and our relations to them. As feminist Donna Haraway argued in her ?Cyborg Manifesto? - the human and object have become intertwined - think about prosthetics, our attachment to our mobile phones - and so fetishism offers us a promise and a way to think through how objects allow us to achieve some sort of satisfaction - not solely ?sexual?. Fetishism, via McCallum?s argument, provides us with critical leverage to not simply demean objects but to look at the hope that objects bring to our lives. Objects - like subjects - offer ways of experiencing pleasure and satisfaction. This relation is not a substitution for relations between subjects BUT rather is an alternative way of knowing the world - an alternative epistemology that opens up ways of knowing the self.

How does this help us think through Manguel? Well, Manguel relying on Lewis Carroll?s Unicorn in Alice?s Adventures Through the Looking Glass notes that ?if you?ll believe in me, I?ll believe in you?. Belief becomes central to our relationships to or with stories. We fall in love with stories that we can ?believe? - even if a story is ?fantasy? we are drawn to it if it is ?believable? or allows us to see ourselves reflected in it. Belief here, I think, comes into contact with knowledge which seems central to the educational project. What is the difference between ?belief? and ?knowledge?. We can probably point to any number of instances where ?belief? is seen as getting in the way of ?knowledge?. Belief is a problem - something that gets in the way of ?knowledge?. But belief is also central to living for belief is what pushes us to create new knowledge. We ?believe? something is wrong and find ways to prove that the flaws of ?knowledge?. Belief pushes us to change the world. Whitney Houston sang about belief - she ?believed the children are our future? and she ?believed in you and me?. She believed these things...she did not ?know? them but used her belief to create music that spoke to her fans worldwide.

Within fetishism belief becomes central for the fetishist ?believes? in the object. The fetishist, in a sense, knows that the object is just that - an object - but the fetishist believes that the object can ?do? something more - can provide psychic satisfaction. And we all probably have memories of an object we imbue with special powers (a blanket, a pacifier, a stuffed animal) that gives us satisfaction. Normal development asks us to give us these objects to create ?proper? relations with other subjects. But, what might it mean to re-ignite our passion for objects - not to the detriment of other subjects - rather so we have diverse ways of achieving satisfaction? Can education work like fetishists and embrace its strange relationships with objects? What might it mean to not, as I have said before, talk about our ?fetishization of standardized tests? in negative light but critically think about how such objects (tests) are used to create satisfaction (probably more for policy makers than students)?

Stories then, as objects, offer possibilities. Complex possibilities, adventures that might take place only in our minds...but it is there in our minds that we come to some sense of satisfaction with our world, ourselves.

By msnbc.com

Lynndie England, who became the face of U.S. military abuses overseas for her role in the Abu Ghraib scandal, says she doesn?t feel bad for detainees who were subjected to torture.

?Their lives are better. They got the better end of the deal,? England told The Daily, a news publication for the iPad,?from her home in Fort Ashby, W. Va. ?They weren?t innocent. They?re trying to kill us, and you want me to apologize to them? It?s like saying sorry to the enemy.?

England was sentenced to?three years behind bars for her role in the abuse scandal.

She appeared in several of the best-known photos taken by U.S. guards at Abu Ghraib, including one image in which she held a naked prisoner on a leash; in others, she posed with a pyramid of naked detainees and pointed at one man?s genitals while a cigarette hung from the corner of her mouth.

At her trial,England said she appeared in the photos at the behest of Pvt. Charles Graner Jr., who she said took advantage of her love and trust while they were deployed in Iraq.

According to the Daily, England lives with her parents, is unemployed, has suffered from PTSD symptoms and is haunted by her past. She told the news?publication that Graner has refused to acknowledge their 7-year-old son, even though his paternity was proved in 2009.

The 29-year-old added that she was troubled by the fear that her actions may have caused the death of members of the U.S. military. "That?s something that falls on my head,? she told The Daily. ?I think about it all the time ? indirect deaths that were my fault. Losing people on our side because of me coming out on a picture.?

Hundreds of protesters flood Union Square in support of the 17-year-old who was fatally shot in Florida.

NEW YORK — Hundreds of people took to New York City streets calling for justice for slain Florida teen Trayvon Martin on Wednesday evening (March 21). Protestors flooded Union Square in what was dubbed the Million Hoodie March, in support of the 17-year-old who was shot on February 26 by 28-year-old neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman in a gated Sanford, Florida, community.

Martin's parents led the demonstrators who demanded that Zimmerman be arrested.

The protest occurred the same day that the Sanford city manager announced that police could not arrest Zimmerman because he was protected by the so-called "Stand Your Ground" law, which allows Floridians to shoot anyone they believe is threatening them.

Martin, who was walking from the store to his dad's home in the gated community, was wearing a hoodie when Zimmerman spotted him and called 911. Police dispatchers instructed Zimmerman not to pursue the teen, but by the time police arrived on the scene, Trayvon was dead.

"By not pressing charges against Zimmerman, they will be continuing a long and horrific history of Jim Crow justice in the deep south," demonstrator Ben Becker told MTV News. "If we are not in the era of Jim Crow justice, George Zimmerman should be arrested and should be prosecuted for murder."

"America really needs to open their eyes to the fact that there is still racism in America," protestor Nicole Sams said. "That racism killed a 17-year-old kid."

Union Square protestors wore hoodies as a sign of solidarity and took turns calling out, "Am I suspicious?" and then chanting, "We want arrests." Several held signs that read, "I am not a hoodlum, I just wear hoods."

"We're not going to stop until we get justice," Trayvon's father, Tracy Martin, said to the crowd. His mother, Sabrina Fulton, thanked the supporters while acknowledging her own grief saying. "My heart is in pain, but to see the support of all of you really makes a difference," she said.

Peyton: 'I'm glad they wanted me'

Josh Johnson PicGetty Images

2012 NFL free agency started out exceptionally strong at wide receiver and cornerback. We?re only seven days into the signing period, and those positions have been decapitated by first-week signings, many of the big-money variety.

The PFT Hot 100 is a good tool for tracking top free agent deals. We?re going to take a more in-depth look here at ten intriguing players that remain unsigned as of Tuesday evening.

1. Quarterback Josh Johnson ? Johnson is still developing after four seasons, but he can power the football downfield with a deceptively strong arm and is a dynamic athlete with blazing straight-line speed. Even if the Niners re-sign Alex Smith, Johnson would make sense as competition for projected No. 2 quarterback Colin Kaepernick in San Francisco.

2. Tight end Jacob Tamme ? Tamme has been largely underutilized as Dallas Clark?s backup in Indianapolis, but he is a weapon in the passing game. When Clark went down with an arm injury in 2010, Tamme piled up 67 catches for 631 yards and four touchdowns, and the Colts? offense didn?t miss a beat. Don?t be surprised if Peyton Manning lobbies harder for Tamme than Clark in Denver. Tamme also has 20 special teams tackles over the past three seasons.

3. Linebacker Manny Lawson ? The 22nd pick in the 2006 draft, Lawson has disappointed as an NFL pass rusher with 16 sacks through six seasons. Lawson is a freak athlete at 6-foot-5, 240 with low-4.4 speed and a 40-inch vertical, however, and he?s wicked smart (43 Wonderlic score). Lawson can set the edge against the run and has always been effective in coverage. With experience in both 3-4 and 4-3 schemes, Lawson should be generating more interest than he has so far.

4. Receiver Early Doucet ? A tough tackle in the slot, Doucet set career highs in catches (54), yards (689), and touchdowns (five) last season amid consistently poor quarterback play in Arizona. The 26-year-old isn?t going to stretch defenses vertically, but Doucet is a serviceable third wideout with plus run-after-catch skills.

5. Defensive tackle Derek Landri ? Landri is an undersized gap shooter at 6-foot-2, 290, but he?s been incredibly productive whenever given extended playing-time opportunities. While Landri lacks ?scheme versatility? in that he appeals only to 4-3 teams, he can get after the passer from the interior and plays with a relentless motor.

6.?Defensive end Dave Tollefson ? Like Landri, Tollefson is a situational player but tends to capitalize when he sees action. Tollefson racked up five sacks in 2011 despite playing fourth fiddle behind Jason Pierre-Paul, Justin Tuck, and Osi Umenyiora. NFL teams won?t view Tollefson as a starter, but he?s a workmanlike lineman with special teams value.

7. Offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz ? Schwartz has visited the Vikings and 49ers so far in free agency. While a hip injury knocked him out for all of the 2011 season, Schwartz was a 16-game starter for Carolina in 2010. He can play right guard and right tackle, and has experience in both zone-blocking and power-running schemes.

8. Running back Justin Forsett ? Forsett is a pint-sized scatback at 5-foot-9, 198, but he excels in the passing game and has averaged 4.63 yards per career carry. The Raiders make sense as a landing spot if Forsett?s price tag is reasonable. New Oakland offensive coordinator Greg Knapp ran the Seahawks? offense during Forsett?s career-best 2009 season.

9. Safety Reggie Smith ? Smith was ticketed for San Francisco?s starting free safety job last year before Dashon Goldson surprisingly returned on a one-year deal two weeks into training camp. Smith played cornerback in college and offers plus size at 6-foot-1, 200. He can also effectively cover kickoffs and punts.

10. Fullback Tony Fiammetta ? The Cowboys didn?t tender Fiammetta in restricted free agency, moving forward with Lawrence Vickers instead. DeMarco Murray was noticeably more productive when Fiammetta was healthy during the 2011 season, however. The 25-year-old is also a willing special teamer.

Duty of care - Travel Risk Management Solutions

Introduction

Duty of care: workplace health and safety for business travelersIf you want to know more, or don?t understand how duty of care and workplace health and safety affects your business travelers, then you must read this article. In this article we will examine duty of care, workplace health and safety and the how it relates to your business travelers.

After reading this article, you will have the correct understanding and subsequent approach to ensure you meet or exceed your obligations to provide a safe and secure environment for your business travelers.

The contents of this article do not constitute legal advice, is general in scope and will not substitute a specific approach for your company.

Duty of Care

Duty of care and the requirement for employers, so far as reasonably practicable, is to ensure that employees are not exposed to risk to their health and safety at work has been in place, in numerous countries for over 30 years. It is not however the primary act or legislation but rather a subset of the workplace or occupational health and safety laws.

The realization or acceptance that duty of care applies to business travel, equally if not more so than traditional static workplace environments, is a relatively new occurrence. This is not due to any significant alteration or refinement of related legislation or laws but more an awakening of conscious and greater volume of informed employees that are both aware and exercise their right to a managed workplace.

Improvement and adherence to workplace health and safety should be the primary focus to all businesses in support of business travel, not duty of care.

Workplace Health and Safety

Workplace or occupational health and safety systems, standards and requirement are already well developed. By expanding these systems and standards to include business travel activities, all companies can quickly and efficiently enhance the safety, security, health and environment of their business travelers without the adoption, implementation of completely new or foreign concepts. For some inexplicable reason, too few businesses have already included business travel as part of their workplace health and safety systems, exposing them and their employees to significant and foreseeable risk.

It has only been in recent times that the definition of the workplace and the conduct of business have been refined to include business travel activities. This and poorly understood or applied risk management systems that encompasses business travel created an Achilles heel for most businesses, who assumed that duty of care was their only corrective imperative.

While proof regarding taking steps to ensure ?reasonably practicable? health and safety measures for employees, or the failure to do so, rests with the prosecution in countries such as Australia, the onus of proving reasonable practability rests with the defendants in the United Kingdom, Singapore and Canada

Workplace Health and Safety for Business Travelers

An increasing number of legal cases are presenting that challenges and repositions the traditional notion that the work place is a single static location. More-and-more, the legislation and legal view is that the workplace is anywhere that a person or business conducting an undertaking is present. Additionally, the conventions that govern the definition of an employee are also expanding to include labour for hire, contractors and other temporary workers. This has clear implications and inclusions for business travel too.

Not withstanding the fact that business travel is likely to be undertaken by the top 5% of talent within an organization, in the pursuit of revenue as high as fifteen dollars per profit for every dollar spent on business travel, it is typically a competitive and financial advantage for businesses. This coupled the growing acceptance that it is considered a place of work by an employee means that all the typical hazard identification and risk mitigation strategies applied elsewhere in the companies processes, need also be applied.

The act of business travel result in numerous variations such as location, gender, airlines, weather, personal health, supporting infrastructure, crime and so on, it therefore stands to reason that commensurable threat analysis, risk mitigation, control measures, compliance, tracking and disclosure should follow. Too few are at this fundamental stage.

For those companies or managers that continue to permit this ?grey area? of business travel not to be considered or treated as required; part of the workplace health and safety system, your time may well be up sooner than you would like. More-and-more business travellers themselves are questioning or demanding they be afforded the same standards and considerations for a risk free work environment. The courts support their views also.

Business travel constitutes a workplace hazard to all employees, until proven otherwise. Only though demonstratable and consistent systems and processes can this be defensible with evidence of due diligence in the area of business travel and workplace or occupational safety.

Conclusion

You should now understand that there is a workplace health and safety obligation to your business travelers and how you must prepare or review adequate systems. Failure to do so may result in reputation, retention, safety, legal, market share and business operations disruptions or failures.

In this article we identified and explained the relationship between duty of care, workplace health and safety and business travelers. Apply this new understanding or review your current perceptions immediately and identify any corrective actions required to achieve adequate or advanced safety, security, health and environment support to your business travelers.
