HBT: Ichiro would prefer to stay with Yankees

Ichiro is drawing interest in free agency following a resurgent final two months of the season, but his agent, Tony Attanasio, told George A. King III of the New York Post that the veteran outfielder would like to stay with the Yankees. In fact, he?s willing to wait out contract talks with Andy Pettitte and Mariano Rivera if need be.

?They are going after pitching first which is what the Yankees normally do,?? Tony Attanasio, Ichiro?s well-respected agent, said yesterday. ?There has been a lot of interest [from teams], but he enjoyed playing for the Yankees so much it?s hard for him to say no to the Yankees. His preference is to stay there instead of going someplace else, but we will wait and see.??

Nick Swisher is also a free agent, so the Yankees have a void in right field at the moment, but hard to see them committing to Ichiro and Brett Gardner as full-time players next season. While it would give them one of the best defensive outfields in the majors, they will likely want some more punch in their lineup. With that in mind, King hears that the Yankees have talked with Scott Hairston?s agent and aren?t against bringing back Raul Ibanez.

Ichiro, 39, batted .322 with five home runs and a .794 OPS in 67 games after coming over from the Mariners in July. Still, he would need to take a steep pay cut from the $17 million he made this past season in order to remain with the Bombers.

New 3-D movie technology: are viewers ready?

2 hrs.

When the?3-D version of "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" debuts in movie theaters on Dec.?14, the film will likely wow viewers with its special effects. But audiences at select theaters will get even more bang for their buck: they?ll be the first to witness a new technology that displays images at a rate of 48 frames per second, twice as fast as the current standard.

The new display rate is sure to look different. Whether audiences will like it is less certain. So far, early reviews have been mixed, according to 3D Focus, a website that tracks changes in 3-D-viewing technology.?

BLOG: Is 3-D vision bad for you??

Some people think the effects look "too real." For others, eyestrain, headaches, nausea and other discomforts are as much of a hazard as they were with the older technologies. That's because most films that are designed to make images look like they are popping out of the screen work by showing each eye different pictures at different times. That forces the brain to merge conflicting messages -- an obstacle that 3-D studios are still working to overcome.

"People really differ," said Marty Banks, a vision scientist at the University of California, Berkeley. "Some people just don't get it and they're fine. Other people are fairly uncomfortable. The industry is really worried about this. They're listening to us?scientists and they?re taking our advice."

ll movies, whether "2-D" or "3-D" create the illusion of movement by flashing one still image after another onto the screen at a rate that is fast enough to fool our brains into seeing action. If the sequence of images is presented too slowly, the result is a shaky effect called "judder" that can sometimes look like a double image.

3-D technology (which Banks prefers to call stereo-3-D or S3-D because even "2-D" movies look three-dimensional) raises the risk for judder because these films usually show screen shots in an alternating sequence to one eye at a time. First the left eye sees an image, then the right eye sees one, then the left eye sees the next image, and so on.

With the latest generation of 3-D glasses, polarizing filters allow each eye to see light coming from just one direction, and screen shots are displayed so that a single lens is targeted at a time. When one eye is stimulated, the other eye is presented with darkness.

It's up to the brain to put everything together into a coherent picture. But with each eye seeing alternating flashes of brightness and darkness, jumpy judder can creep in, causing distraction or discomfort.

BLOG: Sony?s 3-D digital recording binoculars

To solve that problem, 3-D films that are shot at a standard 24 frames per second actually show the left eye a single image three times in a row with flashes of darkness in between. Then the right eye gets its image three times in a row, and that pattern continues for the entire film. This "triple flashing" allows the screen to display 72 frames per second, which reduces flicker effects.

For the new Hobbit, director Peter Jackson used new technology to film at 48 frames per second instead of 24. In real life, our visual systems take in information continuously, and some experts speculate that images will need to be captured at more than 100 or even 150 frames per second before a movie looks truly real. But with any increase in frame-rate speed, motion should look smoother and more realistic.

"As you increase the rate of new incoming data, you're getting closer and closer to the real world," Banks said. "At some rate, you will get to the point where you can?t tell the difference."

But first, moviemakers have some technical issues to deal with.

One question, Engle said, is whether the technological limitations of the projectors used by most theaters will require them to use fewer flashes for each eye before switching to the other eye?s image????a switch that could actually cause new stuttering problems.

NEWS: Underwater movie maker: Shaun MacGillivray

Some theaters use a dual-projector set-up that gets around that issue by showing images to both eyes at the same time, and in those cases, Engle said, the results should be spectacular. But theaters that use a single projector to display 3-D movies will have some new decisions to make, and audiences might not be universally happy about the final product.

"You have to be careful what you wish for," said Rob Engle, 3-D supervisor at a major film studio in Burbank, Calif. "If you have to make compromises in order to increase the frame rate by decreasing the flash rate, you start to run into trade-offs."

As higher frame rates lead to more realism, dismay is also cropping up among people who are used to seeing films that look like films rather than television or real life. Similar complaints have emerged whenever filmmaking technology has risen to a new level over the decades.

"Every time we've moved closer to reality by adding sound, adding color or getting rid of scratches, in the end, the audience has accepted it and there's no going back," Banks said. "I think the same is going to be true here.

"In the end, we all want immersion. We want to feel like we're in that scene and closer to reality. I think once people see it, they are going to go, 'Wow. I want that.'"

To Your Good Health: White coat hypertension requires no ...

Q My husband has "white-coat hypertension" in the form of highly elevated blood pressure whenever he goes to the doctor for his routine checkups. He has a blood pressure monitor at home and checks his blood pressure at least once a day. The machine was calibrated twice by the doctor and was found to be accurate. My husband's readings at home are always 120 or less systolic over 80 or less diastolic with the home machine, but can be 160 systolic at the doctor's office. Does he need additional medication for his blood pressure?

A Reactive hypertension -- high blood pressure resulting from a situational rather than a medical source -- is very common. When it's the result of seeing the doctor -- the "white coat" part -- it can lead to overtreatment if not recognized.

You and your husband have done exactly the right thing -- bought and tested a home machine, and your husband regularly tests his blood pressure at home.

If the readings at home are consistently good and there are no other signs of poorly controlled blood pressure -- the doctor may look at the back of the eyes, listen to the heart, check kidney tests or even get an echocardiogram to look for signs of damage from high blood pressure -- I would not recommend additional medication.

For others in the market for a home machine, home blood pressure cuffs that go around the upper arm, not the wrist or a finger, tend to be the most accurate. Definitely take the machine to the doctor so it can

be checked for accuracy. More blood pressure measurements mean better information for you and your doctor to decide about treatment.

Q I have always known that fish oil is beneficial for its omega-3 content. Now, I see krill oil is being sold, claiming to have the same beneficial properties. But krill are high in cholesterol. How can that be beneficial?

A The benefits of omega-3 fatty acids have been extremely controversial in the past few years, with studies showing conflicting results and a recent study concluding that omega-3 has only a small effect.

My take, after reading all this data, is that omega-3- containing foods, such as fatty fish like salmon, have a modest benefit in reducing heart disease. Fish-oil supplements may be of benefit, especially for people with high cholesterol or heart disease.

One study showed that krill oil supplements reduced cholesterol levels, but I would not recommend taking a supplement until there is clear data not only that blood numbers improve but also that people live longer or are healthier taking a supplement compared with not doing so. We don't yet have that certainty with krill oil.

Finally, the big effect on your blood cholesterol comes from the cholesterol your body makes, not from the cholesterol you eat. Fish oil and, it appears, krill oil seem to affect the way your body makes cholesterol.

Q I have a male relative with diabetes. He takes diabetes medicine, but he eats five or more servings of fruit per day. Should he be restricting his daily fruit intake? Is there too much sugar in five or more fruits per day?

A Sugar from whole fruits acts differently in your body than the way added table sugar or even fruit juice does. Sugar from fruit is absorbed more slowly due to the fiber of whole fruit.

Most diabetes authorities recommend two to four servings of fruit daily. However, each person may react a little differently, and it is pretty easy to check blood sugar before and after eating fruit to see what the effect is on an individual's blood sugar.

Some fruits may be better than others. Many diabetics find apples, which have more fiber and less sugar than some others, to have little effect on their blood sugar.

Q Does a heart murmur cause atrial fibrillation? I have had a heart murmur for years.

A A heart murmur is an abnormal sound heard by your doctor or nurse with a stethoscope. There are many kinds of heart murmurs, and although some of them represent serious disease, many are benign and don't need any testing.

However, one cause of a heart murmur is a defective heart valve. One of these valves, the mitral valve, prevents blood from leaking back into the left atrium from the left ventricle. If this valve is partially blocked -- we use the term "stenotic," and it can be from calcification, rheumatic heart disease or some other cause -- it may lead to enlargement of the left atrium. If the atrium is too big for too long, it can cause atrial fibrillation, which is an abnormal, irregular heartbeat.

In other words, there is one kind of heart murmur that can lead to atrial fibrillation, but it's one of many. Ask your doctor for the cause of your murmur.

Q I am 89. My memory isn't good. I take coconut oil, hoping to improve it. What is your opinion on that?

A Coconut oil has a high concentration of saturated fat. Saturated fat is a factor in raising cholesterol and clogging arteries. However, the effect of coconut oil in those regards isn't as bad as was once believed.

Coconut oil also contains medium chain triglycerides. They have been suggested as a preventative for Alzheimer's disease with its loss of memory.

Personally, I would wait until there is more evidence that coconut oil wards off Alzheimer's disease before using it on a regular basis.

In final days, Mexico's president tries again to get the 'United States' out of 'Mexico'

MEXICO CITY - Mexico's president is making one last attempt to get the "United States" out of Mexico ? at least as far as the country's name is concerned.

The name "United Mexican States," or "Estados Unidos Mexicanos," was adopted in 1824 after independence from Spain in imitation of Mexico's democratic northern neighbour, but it is rarely used except on official documents, money and other government material.

Still, President Felipe Calderon called a news conference Thursday to announce that he wants to make the name simply "Mexico." His country doesn't need to copy anyone, he said.

Calderon first proposed the name change as a congressman in 2003 but the bill did not make it to a vote. The new constitutional reform he proposed would have to be approved by both houses of Congress and a majority of Mexico's 31 state legislatures.

However, Calderon leaves office on Dec. 1, raising the question of whether his proposal is a largely symbolic gesture. His proposal was widely mocked on Twitter as a ridiculous parting shot from a lame-duck president.

Calderon said that while the name change "doesn't have the urgency of other reforms," it should be seen as a relevant issue. "Mexico doesn't need a name that emulates another country and that no one uses on a daily basis," he said.

The United States looms larger than perhaps any other country in the Mexican cultural imagination: Mexicans follow U.S. sports teams, watch U.S. television shows and buy U.S.-made products. For many, however, there is also resentment of a larger and more powerful northern neighbour that's often seen as ignoring or looking down its nose at Mexico.

Calderon has tried to keep Mexico's international image, and its vital tourism industry, from being tarred by the waves of violence set off by his six-year, militarized offensive against drug cartels. At least 47,500 people have died in cartel-related violence during his term in office, although the number is believed to be far higher, since his administration stopped releasing an official count last year.

A poll released this week by the Vianovo consulting firm said that half of all Americans view Mexico unfavourably and more than 70 per cent believe it's unsafe to travel south of the border. The poll of 1,000 adults had a margin of error of four percentage points.

"It's time for Mexicans to return to the beauty and simplicity of the name of our country, Mexico," Calderon said. "A name that we chant, that we sing, that makes us happy, that we identify with, that fills us with pride."

Why Wuxi is not your ordinary Chinese city

Because city planners are hoping to turn Wuxi into a high tech hub, the air is breathable, the streets are broad, and many of the suburban districts look like a bucolic Google campus writ large.

By Peter Ford,?Staff Writer / November 6, 2012

A man fishes outside the office of Wuxi's 5-30 incentive program which has brought dozens of foreign-educated Chinese scientists to the city. The city of 5 million people is unknown outside China, but it is seeking to escape its national image as one of the worst polluters in China.

Wuxi is one of those cities ? and there are dozens of them in China ? that almost nobody outside the country has ever heard of, but turn out to have nearly 5 million people living in them.

What makes Wuxi even more striking is that the city fathers have pinned their hopes for the future on high tech. That means this is not the sort of town you imagine when you think, ?5 million people in a Chinese city.? The air is breathable (indeed the authorities are decommissioning coal-fired power plants near the center of the city), the streets are broad, and many of the suburban districts look like a bucolic Google campus writ large.

Things are not necessarily what they seem, however.

The city?s shiniest success story, until recently, was Suntech, the biggest manufacturer of solar panels in the world. But the company has been hit hard by a downturn in the industry, and saddled with debt has been laying off workers in the past few months.

Still, Wushi has other strings to its bow. While many other Chinese cities have made a name for themselves on the strength of a particular product (?Yiwu ? Sock Capital of the World?), Wuxi has broader appeal. For example it has focused on measuring instruments, which nowadays means digital measuring instruments, another high tech business with good export potential.?

Once, the worst polluter in China

But all this represents a bid by the city to escape its nationwide image as one of the worst polluters in China. For Wuxi built its prosperity on thousands of chemical factories along the shore of Lake Tai, the third largest freshwater lake in China.?

For years they have poured phosphates and other effluents into the lake, sucking out the oxygen and killing the fish and shrimp for which the lake was famous. In 2007 the waters of Lake Tai became so eutrophic they were covered with a thick layer of luminous green, foul smelling pond scum. More than 2 million people were deprived of cooking and drinking water for nearly a week. Each spring the scum re-forms, though rarely as badly as five years ago.

The local government has repeatedly promised to enforce stricter pollution controls, and repeatedly failed to do so, according to environmental nongovernmental organizations. In fact even as Lake Tai was fouling up in 2007, the best known local activist was being jailed for three years on what he insisted were trumped-up charges of fraud and blackmail. Since he got out of prison, reporting that he had been tortured, he has kept his mouth shut.?

(Read Peter Ford's piece on China's polluted lake)

It is not hard to see why. The authorities in Wuxi want to present the world with a clean, modern, international image that will attract traders and investors. And anyone who threatens to sully that image by drawing attention to inconvenient truths had better watch out.

( Interested in more? Read Peter Ford's piece on China's reverse Brain drain here.)
