A volunteer dressed as a Neanderthal woman walks inside a cage at the Warsaw Zoo in Poland. Volunteers agreed to dress like Neanderthals and spend hours locked up in cages in an effort to educate the public that apes should be treated with respect. So how would neo-Neanderthals be treated?
By Art Caplan, Ph.D.
Harvard geneticist George Church caused quite a stir in suggesting in a new book that we might someday be able to clone a Neanderthal baby ? and although he now says his original point was lost in translation, that point is still well worth considering
Church notes that since we have fragments of Neanderthal DNA in fossils, someday it might be possible to assemble them into a complete genome that could be put into a human egg to create a cloned embryo. That embryo could be then put into a human surrogate mother, and a human relative long extinct could be brought back to life.
It is a fascinating scientific speculation. It is an ethical nightmare that should never be tried.
Trying to assemble a complete genome from fragments, even using technology that does not yet exist, would pose a huge risk that some bit of code would be missed or simply wrong. That could mean a stillborn or horribly deformed birth.
Worse, trying to clone a baby from a reconstructed genome using a human egg raises another set of safety issues, ?in that the Neanderthal genome might not grow properly in the setting of the contents of a human egg. Risking a deformed or dead fetus simply created only for reasons of human curiosity is not a sufficient reason to take the chance, now or ever.
Put the safety issues aside: Suppose you could clone a healthy Neanderthal baby from a reconstituted genome and a surrogate mom. Would you create someone who would flourish in our environment? What new viruses and bacteria are out their waiting to kill a child with a 30,000-year-old genome and corresponding immunity system? Native Americans found out through mass death what it was like to encounter European diseases such as smallpox and syphilis. What allergies, asthma and other debilitating diseases would assault this cloned creation?
What if the Neanderthal child was very aggressive by nature? Would it mean a life confined, or drugged, or both?
And what would life be for a cloned Neanderthal baby? Created not out of love but only as a science experiment, the child would be subject to endless inquiry and observation by doctors and scientists eager to know the past through the baby, but not especially interested in the baby for the baby?s sake.
Making Neanderthals ??or, for that matter, dinosaurs or mastodons or any other ancient creature ? sounds cool. But it is actually far more likely to be cruel. Cloning cannot bring back the dead or the extinct. It is neither safe enough nor ethical enough to be worth trying.

Half of U.S. babies may miss on-time vaccinations
Delayed immunization could boost disease risk
By Nathan Seppa
Web edition: January 22, 2013
As the resistance to vaccines that emerged in the public consciousness a decade ago appears to subside, another public health problem is emerging in the form of delayed vaccination. A new study suggests that half of U.S. babies don?t get routine vaccinations on time, some of them because parents put off the shots. The delay rate has climbed since 2004, researchers report January 21 in JAMA Pediatrics.
Scientists reviewed? medical records and found that one-eighth of these delays were intentional as parents defied immunization schedules set out by health authorities. Other parents may have inadvertently missed vaccinations or had lapses in insurance coverage, the study authors say. ?
Some parents see the bunching of recommended vaccinations as risky and try to space out their children?s shots, says study coauthor Jason Glanz, an epidemiologist at the Institute for Health Research at Kaiser Permanente in Denver. Delays in vaccination, sometimes called alternative scheduling, might appeal to those parents since babies are scheduled to get 23 shots during the first two years of life. ?You can see the parents? perspective in saying that?s a lot,? Glanz says. But delays pose risks, he says, since the shots prevent diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, hepatitis, measles, mumps, rubella, polio, rotavirus, pneumonia, meningitis and chickenpox.
Edgar Marcuse, a physician at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, says timely immunization is important precisely because many of these diseases occur in the first years of life. There is no credible, science-based evidence to suggest that putting off vaccines protects children, he says. ?Spacing out the vaccines delays protection, increases the risk that some vaccines will be omitted and increases the cost by requiring multiple visits without yielding any demonstrated benefit.?
Glanz and his colleagues analyzed the vaccination histories of 320,000 children 2 to 24 months of age in eight managed-care organizations across the United States. The researchers considered the shots to be on time if they came with a one-month grace period of the schedule. For a vaccination or booster due at 6 months, for example, a parent had until the 7-month point before the child would be listed in the records as delayed for that shot. Even with that buffer, 49 percent of children were late for at least one vaccination, the records show. Of babies late on vaccinations, 20 percent logged more than 100 days in which they were unprotected from a disease, the records show.
When the researchers looked at three common vaccines, they found that all three showed substantially more first-shot delays in 2008 than in 2004.
Children who had delayed vaccinations had fewer outpatient clinic visits but 20 to 30 percent more hospitalizations than did kids who were vaccinated on time, Glanz says. Kids whose parents delayed their vaccination intentionally were less likely to make outpatient visits to clinics or go to an emergency department than those vaccinated on time. The reason is unclear, Glanz says, but such parents might be less likely to seek standard medical care.

Forty years after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down many state restrictions on abortion with Roe v. Wade, women who want to terminate a pregnancy face a growing number of roadblocks in many parts of the country.
Last year, 19 states enacted a total of 43 provisions limiting access to abortion, according to the Guttmacher Institute. That was half the number that went into effect the previous year, but still the second-highest number since 1985.
"The laws that have been passed, in the last couple of years especially, really make women walk through a gauntlet to get abortions, throughout the country," said Eric Ferrero, a spokesman for Planned Parenthood.
Eight states now require women seeking abortion to have ultrasounds, after Virginia lawmakers passed a measure in 2012. Three states also enacted laws that require abortion providers to have admitting privileges at a local hospital, which can deny them for a variety of reasons.
Louisiana banned abortions after 20 weeks. Utah tripled its mandatory waiting period to 72 hours. A Montana ballot initiative mandated parent notification for abortions on minors under age 16.
In at least four states -- North Dakota, South Dakota, Arkansas, Mississippi -- there is only one clinic.
"When you're the only provider in a state, you become a target," Tammi Kromenaker, director of the Red River Women's Clinic in Fargo, N.D., recently told MSNBC's Rachel Maddow.
The fate of Mississippi's sole clinic, in Jackson, is up in the air. As of mid-January, it had not been able to comply with a new law requiring providers have hospital admitting privileges. If the clinic is shut down, Mississippi would become the first state where getting an abortion is impossible.
Forty years after the Roe v. Wade ruling, Rachel Maddow reports on what it's like for the people who are trying to preserve abortion access in the four states where there remains only one legally operating clinic, and the extreme duress they endure at the hands of anti-abortion extremists who would deny American women their Constitutional right to an abortion.
The erosion is happening as the rate of abortions has leveled off at about 15 per 1,000 women after a steady decline, according to the Centers for Disease Control. At the same time, public support for abortion rights appears to be stable or growing.
A new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll found 54 percent of adults think abortion should be legal always or almost all of the time -- the biggest percentage since the question was first asked a decade ago. Seventy percent don't want Roe v. Wade to be overturned, the highest number since 1989.
But abortion opponents say there's another statistic worth noting: Most Americans don't want public funding of the procedure.
"A majority of Americans do not want their tax dollars being used to fund abortions," said Mallory Quigley, a spokeswoman for the Susan B. Anthony List, which is part of an effort to strip $60 million in women's-health funding from Planned Parenthood.?
U.S. law prohibits federal funding of most abortions, and only 17 states fund abortions for low-income women, most of them under court order. But abortion advocates argue that any government funding of Planned Parenthood for other health services -- from family planning to gynecology exams -- essentially frees up money it can use to provide abortions.
A scorecard put out by Quigley's group says officials in Arizona, Indiana, Kansas, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin have moved to cut funds for the women's health group.?
Jan. 22, 1973: NBC's Garrick Utley and Betty Rollin report on the landmark decision by the Supreme Court on the issue of abortion.
Some state efforts are tied up in court; in others, Planned Parenthood was able to obtain direct federal grants to fill the gap. In Texas, the organization lost a court battle to hold onto funding until a trial.
Ultimately, though, Planned Parenthood believes it will prevail against state efforts to slash its programs, either through legal action or public pressure on lawmakers.
"What we've seen over the last two years is the public doesn?t want these preventive health services to be defunded and the courts won?t allow it," Ferrero said.
